Egypt: New Army Powers Amid Deadly Protests

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 5 minutes ago
Police advanced along the Nile Corniche in Cairo firing volleys of tear gas grenades at demonstrators choking on Egypt's Islamisation under the Muslim Brotherhood, two years into the revolution that brought them to power. Declaring a state of emergency in three major cities on Sunday night, President Mohammed Morsi, a Brotherhood member, secured the approval of Egypt's senate to grant the armed forces powers of arrest. http://news.sky.com/story/1043960/egypt-new-army-powers-amid-deadly-protests

The Liberation Of Timbuktu

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 15 minutes ago
There's been a lot of hand wringing over the French role in Mali's civil war. Some very sincere observers refuse to see beyond the Western imperialism or the anti-Muslim interpretations-- although it wasn't a Westerner who coined the nifty phrase "beasts with turbans" for the jihadis ramaging through northern Africa now. Since my trip to Mali in 2008, I've written a few dozen articles about the country on my travel blog, about the music, the tourism, the food, the culture, the politics and, of course, the civil war that has ravaged the country. Here, at *DWT* there have been fewe... more »

Alternative Futures

There appears to be two disparate world views that dominate the political landscape in the United States in the beginning of the twenty-first century. One of these philosophical orientations has at its core belief the idea that the individual is the central preoccupation of the social order and the other belief system maintains that it is the well-being of the community that is the primary concern. The individual-based political system takes as its model the viewpoint as delineated by Ayn Rand in her seminal works, *Atlas Shrugged* and *The* * Fountainhead*. She defined her philo... more »

Market Populism

Phil at A Very Public Sociologist - 25 minutes ago
The market and the people - both of them understood as grand principles of social life ... were essentially one and the same. By its very nature the market was democratic, perfectly expressing the popular will through the machinery of supply and demand, poll and focus group, superstore and internet. In fact, the market was more democratic than any of the formal institutions of democracy - elections, legislatures, government ... The market was infinitely diverse, permitting without prejudice the articulation of any and all tastes and preferences. Most importantly of all, the market... more »

Farrakhan: Right To Bear Arms An Outdated Concept

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 40 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – In the third installment of his 52-week sermon series, Nation of Islam leader, Minister Louis Farrakhan, ridiculed the “volatile” American right to own weapons. On Sunday, Farrakhan continued “The Time and What Must Be Done” sermon series by stating that Americans are increasingly angry at the government, and are simultaneously preparing themselves for war. Farrakhan went on to say that the Second Amendment has little relevance in modern society, stating that the constitutional right to bear arms is outdated. http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013/01/28/farrakhan... more »

I'm still trying to figure out how things work, or don't work, in Honduras by reading the newspapers. It's baffling. (Maybe it would also be baffling for a Honduran trying to figure out Canada by reading the newspapers there.) I've been struck lately by the sense that there are a lot of reports on things going wrong, but little analysis to pull them into some coherent framework, or show how they're related. La Prensa reported that the public hospital in Tocoa, a city of about 45,000, is being evicted by the building owner because the health ministry hasn't paid the rent for 10 months.... more »

France fears Islamist rise in Syria unless opposition helped

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 1 hour ago
France's foreign minister said on Monday Syria risks falling into the hands of Islamist militant groups if supporters of the Syrian opposition do not do more to help it in a 22-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad. Addressing the opening of a conference in Paris with senior members of the Syrian National Coalition, Laurent Fabius said the meeting must focus on making the opposition politically and militarily cohesive to encourage international assistance. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/28/us-syria-crisis-talks-idUSBRE90R0D720130128

Irish banks at mercy of international paymasters

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 1 hour ago
Ireland's banking recovery could yet be derailed by its international creditors. The European Central Bank's refusal so far to give Dublin any relief on the 30-billion euro cost of bailing out Anglo Irish Bank is a major setback for government ambitions to exit an EU-IMF bailout this year and give the euro zone its first post-crisis success story. The failure to agree a deal on Anglo Irish also overshadows the country's banks. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/28/us-banks-ireland-idUSBRE90R0PP20130128

Future of Senate Reform

Chris Bowers (who seems to be blogging a lot now, which is excellent news) argues that the main obstacle to Senate reform has been senior Senators -- and that therefore cohort replacement will eventually produce much more significant reforms that what the Senate managed to enact last week. The problem here is that we don't know whether folks such as Barbara Boxer and Carl Levin are reluctant to support reform (or perhaps reluctant to support majority-imposed reform) because they sha... more »

North Koreans may be resorting to cannibalism for survival as grave food insufficiency continues to weaken the isolated Communist State, which has again been in the news lately over its threat to execute a third nuclear test, in response to the UNSC resolution, which slammed the North for its December rocket launch, and intensified the existing sanctions against the country. Several impoverished North Koreans may be embracing cannibalism for survival has been reported by certain international media outlets. European Free Trade Association court dismisses all claims against Iceland

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 5 hours ago
Iceland unexpectedly won its legal battle to avoid being forced to pay back the British and Dutch governments for not honouring deposit guarantees for savers in Icesave. The EFTA (European Free Trade Association) court on Monday dismissed all claims against Iceland, ruling that it had not breached the deposit guarantee directive due to the magnitude of the systemic crisis that Iceland experienced. It also held that Iceland had not discriminated between depositors in its own country and those in the UK or Netherlands. Iceland reacted with relief after government officials had long be... more »

George Osborne attacks Nick Clegg over EU referendum claim

In a further sign of growing tension in the Coalition over the issue the Chancellor appeared to rebuke Mr Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, for saying that a referendum is not in the national interest. Mr Clegg yesterday described the debate on the UK’s place in the EU as “arcane”. "It is not in the national interest when we have this fragile recovery, when we have a very open economy which is very dependent on investors in the car industry and the banking system and so on,” he told the BBC’s Andrew Marr show. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9831345/George-Osborne-attacks-... more »

Islamist insurgents retreating from the ancient Saharan city of Timbuktu have set fire to a library containing thousands of priceless ancient manuscripts, some dating back to the 13th century, in what the town's mayor described as a "devastating blow" to world heritage.
