North Korea Raises Military Combat Readiness Level

Matt at The Coming Crisis - 3 minutes ago
Four days after Kim Jong Eun was cited in the North Korean media as saying that he would order “great national action” in response to the most recent UN Security Council resolution sanctioning the country, the authorities have moved the military to a state of increased combat readiness. An inside source from North Hamkyung Province revealed news of the step on the 30th, saying, “The status change to preparation for combat mobilization was declared today at midnight.” A day earlier on the 29th, the authorities issued an emergency order instructing Party cadres to stay at their desks... more »

New York Times says targeted by China hackers after Wen report

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 5 minutes ago
The New York Times said on Thursday that Chinese hackers had "persistently" attacked its computers over the past four months since the paper published a story on Premier Wen Jiabao, but sensitive material related to the report was not accessed. The New York Times said the attacks coincided with its report last October that Wen's family had accumulated at least $2.7 billion in "hidden riches". China said at the time the report smeared its name and had ulterior motives. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/31/us-china-newyorktimes-idUSBRE90U05620130131

Iran crude oil exports rise to highest since EU sanctions

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 5 minutes ago
Iran's crude oil exports in December leapt to their highest level since European Union sanctions took effect last July, analysts and shipping sources said, as strong Chinese demand and tanker fleet expansion helped the OPEC member dodge sanctions. Exports rose to around 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd) in December, according to two industry sources and shipping and customs data compiled by Reuters on a country-by-country basis and corroborated by other sources and consultants. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/31/us-iran-oil-exports-idUSBRE90U01Y20130131

Magnitude-6.8 earthquake shakes northern Chile killing at least 1 Person

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 5 minutes ago
A magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook offices, toppled supermarket shelves and broke windows on Wednesday in north-central Chile, where people fled some buildings in panic. A 50-year-old woman in the city of Copiapo died of a heart attack, said Atacama Regional Governor Rafael Prohens, who attributed her death to fear during the quake. Authorities said that damage was limited and discounted the possibility of a tsunami. The U.S. Geological Survey originally reported the quake at 6.7, but later revised it upward. It struck at 4:15 p.m. (3:15 p.m.; 2015 GMT) and was centered 27 miles (44 ... more »

Powerful storms in Georgia flip cars, decimate homes; 2 dead

Lynsey at The Coming Crisis - 9 minutes ago
A massive storm system raked the Southeast on Wednesday, generating tornadoes and dangerous winds that flipped cars on a major Georgia interstate, demolished homes and businesses and killed at least two people. WSB-TV in Atlanta aired footage of an enormous funnel cloud bearing down on Adairsville where the storm ripped through the city's downtown. Winds flattened homes and wiped out parts of a large manufacturing plant in the city about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta. Thousands of cows were abandoned in the evacuated zone around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the Tōhoku region of Japan and released radioactive materials from the plant. Now, nearly two years after the disaster, those abandoned cattle were found to be contaminated with radioactive elements. After Christmas and the New Year celebrations, it is normally this time of year when the January blues start to set in, and most people start setting resolutions as they promise themselves to detox and get fitter. So, there is no better time than now to start thinking about how these resolutions can not only help your own well-being but also the environment. Syria: Israeli jets strike Jamaraya arms depot near Damascus leaving casualties

The Syrian government, by admitting that the Israel Air Force attacked the Jamaraya “Military Research Institute” (a euphemism for an arms deport), near Damascus, broke the barrier of silence the Israeli government had clamped down on its initial involvement in the Syrian conflict. It also indicated that Bashar Assad may have decided to pick up the gauntlet thrown down by Israel. The Syrian statement also refuted the report by foreign media from “Israeli sources” that Israeli jets had struck a convoy carrying sophisticated weapons from Syria to the Hizballah in Lebanon. NETANYAHU CONCEDES ISRAEL CAN’T SUCCESSFULLY ATTACK IRAN ALONE

For years I have been writing saying that Israel could not unilaterally attack Iran without the full blessing, support and connivance of the United States despite Netanyahu’s threats that he would. And of course they don't spend in the last quarter because they're out of money. But this time the swing was bigger than usual. Monday night, speaking with Greta van Susteren, Lindsey Graham took the nation down a repulsive old road. “I haven’t forgotten about Benghazi,” Senator Graham dimwittedly said. “Hillary Clinton got away with murder, in my view.” What makes this a repulsive *old* road? Catch of the Day

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 7 hours ago
(Updated) The Catch goes to Ed Kilgore, who notes the similarities between this year's and last year's Republican obsessions. The key point, however, generalizes beyond that: When a significant group of politicians decide to make some event or issue the center of media attention, they can often do so to a considerable extent whether it makes sense or not. When an entire political party becomes committed to an event or issue as of transcendent importance, it instantly becomes so regardless of the merits of the case. That's right; we tend to assume that heavy news coverage is the res... more »

*WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2013* *Part 3—Maddow imitates Hannity:* At the start of the week, Americans were treated to a very rare sight: Senators from the two major parties seemed to have reached a general agreement about a major policy matter! It has been a long time since the two parties seemed to be able to perform such a task. We almost thought we could hear the end of Richard Blanco’s inaugural poem, the one he delivered just last week, in which we the people engage in collective action, just like Obama said: We head home: through the gloss of rain or weight of snow, or the plu... more »

Happy Birthday to Davey Johnson, 70. Best manager of his generation, in my view. Anybody know why the Braves released him in 1975, right at the beginning of the season? His fluke year had been 1973, and he returned to normal in 1974, but his normal was still a whole lot better than what Marty Perez, who replaced him, could do. And Perez was 29, so it's not as if there was any question about what he could do. Of course, without the full year as a regular, maybe the Braves couldn't have managed to snag Willie Montanez from the Giants the next year for Perez. Oh, except they also tosse... more »
