West 'to blame' for Syria's destruction, says top diplomat
Syria is being destroyed ‘bit by bit’, a top diplomat has said.
The fault for its destruction lies with president Bashar Assad’s government
and the western-backed opposition forces, the joint UN-Arab League envoy
Lakhdar Brahimi said.
Speaking at the UN he said: ‘Objectively, they are co-operating to destroy
Syria. Syria is being destroyed bit by bit.
‘And in destroying Syria, the region is being pushed into a situation that
is extremely bad, and extremely important for the entire world.’

of his solutions and thought we might look at it. Back in 1975, at Loring
Air Force Base in Maine, Sergeant Steven Eichner, was working with Sergeant
R. Jones, when Jones saw a red and orange object over the flight line. To
both of them the object looked like a “stretched out football” that hovered

Israel 'Strikes Syrian Convoy Inside Lebanon'
Israel has struck a weapons convoy on the border of Syria and Lebanon,
according to multiple sources.
Israeli jets carried out the strike overnight on the convoy which was said
to be coming from Syria, and was in the area of the Lebanon-Syria border.
An unnamed secuity source told the AFP news wire: "The Israeli air force
blew up a convoy which had just crossed the border from Syria into Lebanon."

EU freezes 900 mln euros to Poland pending fraud probe
The European Union has frozen about 890 million euros ($1.20 billion) in
aid earmarked for building Polish roads because of a suspected fraud by
contractors, a Commission spokeswoman said on Wednesday.
The suspension, which is likely to be only temporary, comes at an awkward
time for the Polish government which is already dealing with a sharp
economic slowdown and thousands of lay-offs in the construction industry.
Poland's Deputy Minister for Regional Development, Adam Zdzieblo, said the

Caleb Moore 'not expected to survive' after horror crash in front of thousands at X-Games
Snowmobiler Caleb Moore was still fighting for his life Tuesday in a
Colorado hospital after a dramatic crash at the Winter X Games in Aspen,
and a relative said the family wasn't hopeful about the 25-year-old's
chances for survival.
Moore was performing a flip last Thursday when he clipped the top of a jump
and went over the handlebars and landed face first into the snow. The
snowmobile rolled over him, but he walked off with help and went to a
hospital with a concussion.

French military says troops control airport in key Malian city
In the latest blow to militants, the French military said Wednesday it has
seized the airport in Kidal, the last major town under rebel control in
northern Mali.
If the forces secure the town, it will be the last major city in their
sweep north to flush out Islamist militants in Mali, France's former colony.

If Coca-Cola were serious about addressing public health and making *real*changes to fix the obesity issue, the company would:
- Stop targeting kids with advertisements and stop heavily influencing
young children’s minds.
- Stop fighting and keeping quite clear research linking sugary
beverages to illness and disease.
- Stop targeting minorities and pushing products in developing countries
where obesity rates are escalating.
- Create a product that is actually healthful and beneficial and push
that over it’s health-destroying products.

Ministers to blame for high fuel prices, says competition watchdog
MPs and motoring groups have reacted furiously after the Office of Fair
Trading (OFT) decided not to hold a full inquiry into whether fuel prices
in the UK are being manipulated.
The OFT said there is “no evidence” that high petrol and diesel prices in
the UK are caused bad behaviour in the industry.
It said that the petrol market is “working well” – despite consumers paying
near-record prices at the pumps.
The report said that pre-tax, “the UK has some of the cheapest road fuel
prices in Europe”.

G4S outsourcing deal with police forces collapses
A plan by three police forces to outsource services to a private firm has
collapsed after Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) rejected it.
Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire forces were looking at
contracting G4S to provide joint IT and human resources.
Instead the forces said they would increase their internal collaboration.

Syrian state media blamed the Islamist rebel Nusra Front for the killing of
dozens of people in the northern city of Aleppo, contradicting activist

South Korea launches space rocket carrying satellite
South Korea says its third attempt at launching a rocket to put a satellite
in space has been a success.
The Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 (KSLV-1) blasted off from the Naro Space
Center at 16:00 (07:00 GMT).
Science Minister Lee Ju-ho said the satellite, which will collect climate
data, was in its correct orbit.
The launch comes weeks after North Korea used its own three-stage rocket to
place a satellite into orbit, sparking international criticism

Separatist rebels take Mali town
Secular Tuareg fighters have claimed control of the last major Jihadist
bastion in Mali’s north, the town of Kidal, complicating France’s lightning
military offensive into the Sahara.
Mossa Ag Attaher, spokesman for the separatist National Movement for the
Liberation of Azawad, which is fighting for the autonomy of Mali’s desert
north, said his group took Kidal on Monday after Islamists fled French air

French troops deploy in last of Mali rebel strongholds
French troops have taken control of the airport in the northern Malian town
of Kidal, the last rebel stronghold in the north, the French army and a
local official told Reuters on Wednesday.
Kidal would be the last of northern Mali's major towns to be retaken by
French forces, which retook Gao and Timbuktu earlier this week in a
campaign to drive al Qaeda-linked Islamists from Mali's north.

Spain GDP Shrinks For Sixth Straight Quarter as they Sink Deeper into Recession
Spain has sunk even deeper into recession, according to newly released
figures.
The struggling eurozone country saw its gross domestic product (GDP) shrink
by 0.7% in the fourth quarter.
The contraction was worse than expected and means Spain has now suffered
six straight quarters of negative growth.

Nigerian Farmers Lose Shell Oil Claim
Dutch judges have rejected most of a landmark case brought by Nigerian
farmers against Royal Dutch Shell over the poisoning of fish ponds and
farmland with leaking pipelines.
The Hague Civil Court rejected all cases against the Netherlands-based
company.
However, in one case, it ordered subsidiary Shell Nigeria to compensate a
farmer for breach of duty of care by making it too easy for saboteurs to
open an oil pipe.

Robert Plant's DNA Linked To French Jogger's Murder
Police in France say DNA recovered from a crime scene where a
mother-of-three was stabbed to death matches that of a British suspect.
A search was launched after Joudia Zimmat, 34, failed to collect her
three-year-old daughter from school in Nimes.
Police sniffer dogs later discovered her body, and police believe she was

Millions of workers should be tested for drugs: Met police chief declares war on substance abuse
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe has suggested
anyone who fails a drugs test and refuses help to get clean should lose
their job. He said testing (top) in the workplace (below) could take place
in 'all occupations' but cited in particular teachers, intensive care
nurses and transport staff. Sir Bernard said drug testing and the fear of
losing their job would act as a deterrent for drug users.

U.S. rating still at risk despite reduced threats from DC
The retreat by Republicans from threats to push the United States into a
debt crisis has stayed the hand of at least one credit ratings agency, but
that does not mean the United States is suddenly safe.
The country has retained its top triple-A rating from Moody's Investors
Service and Fitch Ratings, despite rising debt levels. It was downgraded by
one notch in 2011 by Standard & Poor's after a chaotic debt ceiling battle.
On Monday, Fitch said the recent debt ceiling extension eliminates the
immediate risk to the rating.

Rare pygmy elephants are found dead in Malaysia
Ten endangered Borneo pygmy elephants have been found dead in a Malaysian
forest, with wildlife officers saying that they were probably poisoned.
The carcasses were found near each other in the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve,
Laurentius Ambu, director of the wildlife department in Malaysia’s Sabah
state on Borneo island, said.
Officers also rescued a calf that was apparently trying to wake its dead
mother.

Beach foam may be toxic, expert warns
A toxicologist has warned against frolicking in the smelly brown foam
blanketing Sunshine Coast beaches as hidden dangers lurk within.
University of Queensland Associate Professor Barry Noller said residents
should steer clear of the foam whipped up by strong winds off the foreshore
for fears it may be poisonous and containing pollutants, toxins and sewage.
Holidaymakers at Mooloolaba Beach Holiday Park have complained of itching

Police forces veto G4S outsourcing deal
Three police forces have abandoned a planned outsourcing contract with the
security company G4S after their newly appointed police and crime
commissioners vetoed the deal.
Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire police were considering
contracting G4S to provide information technology and human resources
support as part of a money-saving collaboration strategy. But in a meeting
Tuesday night the commissioners decided to drop the plans.

Brazil fire caused by cheap fireworks, say police
The chief investigator in the southern Brazilian city of Santa Maria has
said that cheap fireworks meant for outdoor use caused a deadly nightclub
fire.
The death toll in Sunday's blaze reached 235 people after a 21-year-old man
died of his injuries in hospital.
Police chief Marcelo Arigony said the band had chosen not to buy more
expensive indoor flares.
Earlier, a court froze the assets of the owners of the Kiss nightclub.

Chaos in Egypt Stirs Warning of a Collapse
As three Egyptian cities defied President Mohamed Morsi’s attempt to quell
the anarchy spreading through their streets, the nation’s top general
warned Tuesday that the state itself was in danger of collapse if the
feuding civilian leaders could not agree on a solution to restore order.
Thousands of residents poured into the streets of the three cities,
protesting a 9 p.m. curfew with another night of chants against Mr. Morsi
and assaults on the police.

'Syria Is Being Destroyed' Says UN Envoy
The war in Syria has reached "unprecedented levels of horror" after
evidence emerged of the massacre of dozens of men, the UN envoy for the
country has said.
Lakhdar Brahimi told the divided UN Security Council it must act now to
prevent further atrocities like the apparent execution of at least 65 men
found dumped in a river in Aleppo.
Syrian rebels blamed president Bashar al Assad's government for the
killings, but state media said an Islamist opposition faction was to blame.

The death toll of children from pneumonia and measles in Kohistan area of
Upper Dir district increased from 25 to 47 as a team of health officials
returned from the remote area on Monday. Executive District Officer (EDO
Health) Dr Abdul Wakeel confirmed 47 deaths from the outbreaks that hit
Thal, Kumrat and Lamoti areas of Dir Kohistan. He said the most of the
areas were inaccessible due to snowfall. He feared the deaths could be more

alcohol won damages today after a European court ruled his human rights had
been breached.
Samuel Betteridge, 58, from Mablethorpe, was jailed after he pleaded guilty
to two counts of rape and one of attempted rape at Lincoln Crown Court in
2005.
A 13-month delay between the end of Betteridge's minimum term and his first
parole hearing was a breach of his right to a speedy hearing, the European

UN nuclear watchdog backs Iran's denial of Fordow explosion
The United Nations atomic watchdog made clear on Tuesday it had seen no
sign of any explosion at one of Iran's most sensitive nuclear plants,
backing up Tehran's denial that such an incident had taken place last week.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in an unusual move, made a

Bird Flu kills two Cambodian children
Two children have died of bird flu in Cambodia, bringing the number of
cases recorded in January to five, officials said on Tuesday.
A 17-month-old girl and a nine-year-old girl died on Monday after
contracting H5N1 influenza, a joint statement from the World Health
Organisation and Cambodia's Ministry of Health said.
The children were from villages in the southern provinces of Kampong Speu
and Kampot, where recent poultry deaths had been reported, they said.
