I recall reading an analysis by Dr. John v. Kampen on his website My Hiding Place http://my.opera.com/nepmak2000/blog a couple of years or so ago. He said rather than worrying about asteroid impacts as we have been doing, it would be much more sensible to think about the effects of airbursts from ice comets hitting the atmosphere, coming in from so far out on such a steep orbit that there would be no warning. He things the Tanganuska event might have been such. That could be beaten by SoTT’s companion blog Cassiopaeia Project. There the idea is that we have regular periods of clusters of such airbursts throughout history…and that we are not taught about such in school. The plot is familiar from one of the early Stargate SG-1 episodes, set in an alien world. And, done differently, as part of the backdrop necessitating a culture of protective dragonriders on Anne Maccaffrey’s series set on low gravity PERN.
