Ignore Those Polls! (Scandals and the Economy Edition)

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 22 minutes ago
There's a new Quinnipiac poll out with findings about scandalmania that are drawing attention, including a ranking of the scandals (respondents answered that the IRS scandal is more important than Benghazi or the AP stories) and something that sounds very nice at the moment for Democrats: by a large margin, respondents say that the economy is more important than the scandals. Ignore those polls! First: people are notoriously terrible about predicting how events will affect their votes, or even their future opinions. People may say that the economy is more important than scandals...... more »

March against Monsanto: Rallying for our Future

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 58 minutes ago
[image: Photo by Eric Draitser] *May 30, 2013 *(RT - Eric Draitser) - The worldwide March Against Monsanto this past Saturday was no mere political demonstration. Rather, it was a worldwide mobilization against corporate greed, the assault on our health and environment, and the oppression of small farmers. As the diverse crowd gathered in New York City’s Union Square on an unseasonably cold and rainy Memorial Day weekend – just as they did in hundreds of cities around the world – it was clear that Monsanto and the issue of health and food sovereignty transcends political ideology... more »

An extremely cloudy Prague in 2013

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 1 hour ago
A Czech Canadian e-pal has complained to me that "the month of May was worth [an excrement]: cold, windy, rainy etc". But that's nothing compared to the first five months as we have experienced them in Czechia. The Czech media such as The Week (EN) have told us about some cold hard figures describing the weather in Prague between January 1st and May 17th, 2013. In this 137-day-long period, the number of hours when it was "clear skies" in Prague was just 80. To compare, it was 417 hours in the same period of the year 2011. I kid you not: the total length of the "clear skies" i.e... more »

COP STORIES

- I am at the Portland, Maine airport preparing to head to San Francisco. I refuse to go through these X-ray security scanners so always get the pat-down from TSA agents. It's amazing to see how compliant we all can become with this ever present surveillance system that has been imposed on us. Do people going thru these machines even have second thoughts about it? - Once through security I walked into one of the shops and was gazing at newspaper headlines. The New York Times had a color top-of-the-fold photo from Spain that jumped out at me. In a f... more »

Keeping Up With The Thwapmeister General

thwap at thwap's schoolyard - 1 hour ago
I said that I'd take a break from online "activism" but yet, still I blog. It's because I'm an egotistical narcissist. Also, ... I'd say my blogging has been reduced. Also, I'd say that it's much more slap-dash. (I often don't bother to put in hyperlinks to stories. Look it up yerselves if you don't know already, is my attitude.) Plus, there's a lot less passion in the way I write. Not so much outrage. More contempt. I also understand that some people don't blog because they want everything to be perfect before they publish something and don't have the time for that. But they like ... more »

Stories Of Human Rights Abuses In Iraq From Amnesty International and the State Department’s Annual Reports

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 1 hour ago
Amnesty International and the U.S. State Department recently released their annual reports on human rights around the world. As usual, Iraq fared badly. Neither organization found any improvements in the situation within the country. The common charges of mass arrests, arbitrary detentions, holding suspects without charges and access to lawyers, torture and abuse of prisoners, holding people that should be released, corruption, intimidation and harassment of the media, and limiting freedom of speech and assembly were all heard. These abuses occurred at the hands of both the central...more »

The experts, who indicated that they were “cautiously optimistic” about the development, said that the gains were most likely to be made in the Midwest. How ridiculous are the attacks on Iran? An Argentinian prosecutor says Iran has "the goal of committing, fomenting and fostering acts of international terrorism in concert with its goals of exporting the revolution" in "Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago." Really? Let's start at the top - fomenting an Islamic revolution in Brazil? That's going to be pretty darn tough, because there are a grand total of 27,000 Muslims in Brazil - a whopping 0.01% of the population.

Listening to Robert Kaiser's review of the inadequacies of the financial educations of the present majority of Congressional members reminds me of that story about when Pete Townsend (wunderkind song/opera/film creative genius of The Who) was being continually urged to sign a document that was (mysteriously) only appearing whenever he was drunk or stoned. He still absolutely refused to sign.

The Bad Part of Bachmann's Bye-Bye

2old2care at Because I Can - 21 hours ago
When Bachmann was in the race - everyone in the sixth district knew she was a nut job and crazy - even the ones who voted for her. In the last election moderates pretty much kicked her to the curb. In the last election her main campaign slogan was "I'm Back" - after spending over a year running for president. NOW With Bachmann not running - we will not be able to tell if Jim Graces opponent is a nut job. It would have been easier - no problem - to win the 6th against Bachmann. Now we don't know who we will be up against - or how crazy they are. It could be ALEC-er Tom Emmer and he... more »

Michele Bachmann, retiring from the House one step of the ethics investigators and, most likely, her district's voters. Garance Franke-Ruta watches her announcement video; Jonathan Chait remembers some of her greatest hits. Notes? 1. No, she was never the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, or anything more than an extreme longshot. 2. Yes, she certainly did bring The Crazy. If she didn't really believe the things she said, she did an excellent job of acting as if she did. 3. No, it's not true that most Republican Members of the House are interchangably nuts. The Science of Climate Change Denialism

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 22 hours ago
Denialism as a science? It could be a social science, the science of manipulating public consciousness to produce a predictable effect, the divergence of public opinion from fact. What is denialism but a carefully researched, very refined and focused form of propaganda? The Pentagon's DARPA, *Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency*, has launched a study into the neuroscience underlying propaganda, how people fall prey to indoctrination and the physical changes they undergo. *Existing technology can carry out micro-facial feature analysis, and measure the dilation of blood ve... more »

Welfarism 25: Centenarians and Populist Legislators

Being populist and highly welfarist to get high public and voters' support is a scourge of many legislators and politicians. They propose more public spending, or more anti-business policies just to say they have authored or co-authored a pro-poor bill or law. One such law is the mandatory discount of 20 percent + 12 percent VAT-free credit for a 32 percent effective mandatory discount, for senior citizens (60 years or older) in their purchase of medicines, hospitalization and healthcare bill, plane fare, restaurants bill, and so on. The law does not distinguish rich and poor senior... more »

How The DCCC Is Making Hay Of The GOP Vote To Force Up The Student Loan Rate Against Vulnerable Congressmen

R. v. C.T., 2013 ONCA 350 holds: [17] First, the trial judge erred by making the order without indicating he was considering making it and giving the Crown an opportunity to address the issue. There was no application by the defence to exclude the testimony. In fact, after the child had been excused as a witness, Crown counsel had indicated that if the defence intended to argue that there had been no opportunity to meaningfully cross-examine he had submissions to make in closing argument. For-profit health care: When surgical complications are good for business

I believe market forces and the pursuit of profits often bring creativity and innovation. But not so much for health care. The problem was nicely crystallized in a Business Week article I read years ago, profiling the star CEO of a hospital chain. He was lauded for increasing revenue per patient, a key indicator. A few more tests, an extra day in hospital, fees for every aspririn dispensed, and the corporation does well and the CEO gets a bonus. The problem was set out more starkly in a Wall Street Journal I snagged in one of the airports on the way back to Copan Ruinas from Victoria.... more »

Is Iraq’s Prime Minister Maliki More Like Premier Nuri al-Sa’id Than Saddam? An Interview With Historian Phebe Marr

The most typical comparison made by critics of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is that he is becoming the next Saddam Hussein. This can be heard by various politicians from the Sadr bloc (1) to Iyad Allawi (2) to Deputy Premier Saleh al-Mutlaq to Kurdish Premier Nechirvan Barzani. This is hyperbole meant to score political points with their constituents against Maliki since Saddam is an obvious reference point from the recent past that all of Iraqi society remembers. In terms of historical leaders in the country however, Maliki might be more like Nuri al-Sa’id (1888-1958) who was t... more »
