They peacefully broke the law and made a personal sacrifice to show the Obama Administration how severe the situation really is. Every day from August 20th-September 3rd, hundreds of people will be sitting-in at the White House to tell President Obama to reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. No Telling Whether Obama's Okay with Keystone XL

The Mound of Sound at The Disaffected Lib - 5 minutes ago
President Obama has said the Keystone XL pipeline can only go ahead if it doesn't "significantly increase" U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. There's enough wiggle room in there to delight almost everybody. Define "significantly." There you go. What does it mean if you export the really filthy petroleum coke or petcoke bitumen refining by-product to Asia and let them burn it? Is that okay? Does that just go on someone else's carbon books and off America's? And in a country with the rapacious energy consumption of the United States anything "significant" would be huge almost anywh... more »

Civil-Military Relations– Why A Little Conflict is OK

amurdie at Duck of Minerva - 26 minutes ago
Robert’s review of The American Culture of War yesterday was both extremely funny and informative. It also mentioned a problem I’ve seen in a lot of the civil-military relations literature: too much over-identification with a political leaning or ideology. This area of scholarship reminds me sometimes of Jack Nicholson in “A Few Good Men” – Continue reading

The 441 TRILLION Dollar Interest Rate Derivatives Time Bomb

noreply@blogger.com (Mark Daniels) at Global Political Awakening - 1 hour ago
Michael Snyder Do you want to know the primary reason why rapidly rising interest rates could take down the entire global financial system? Most people might think that it would be because the U.S. government would have to pay much more interest on the national debt. And, yes, if the average rate of interest on U.S. government debt rose to just 6 percent (and it has actually been much higher in the past), the federal government would be paying out about a trillion dollars a year just in interest on the national debt. But that isn't it. Nor does the primary reason have to do with... more »

Mistake of fact and due diligence are different defences

*R. v. Legrande* 2013 ABCA 229 makes clear the distinction between mistake of fact and due diligence. For strict liability offences a reasonable belief in a mistaken set of facts that would render the act innocent is a defence. Due diligence, that is taking all reasonable sets to avoid the wrongful act, is also a defence. But they are different defences and combining the two in some "reasonableness" standard is an error of law.

And Cohn provides a little historical context: Once upon a government, when the Mike Harris Tories downloaded social services upon Toronto (with Rob Ford’s father, Douglas, serving faithfully as a backbench MPP), the cash-strapped city got temporary compensation. from Mark's Daily Apple: 8 Primal Mantras for Beginners Becoming healthy is as much a mental process as it is a physical experience. Most of us would admit we find ourselves overhauling much more than simply our dinner plates or daily exercise. Oftentimes, we’re upending years – or decades – of unhealthy inertia as well as eating, destructive self-talk as well as inactivity. I hear from a lot of beginners who say they look to certain posts or even paragraphs when the going gets tough. Something they read here sticks with them, and it touches off something in their motivation. On a ... more »

Snowden on the run

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 21 hours ago
“He wanted a simple life.” ~Attorney Albert Ho I'm at the point where I don't know what to make of of our hapless leaker. Edward Snowden's story keeps changing and with every new iteration he contradicts his earlier declarations. The only thing clearly true at the moment is he has fled Hong Kong. Certainly he didn't research the legal system there before he decided it was the perfect place to seek asylum. Then began a two-hour conversation during which Mr. Snowden was deeply dismayed to learn that he could spend years in prison without access to a computer during litigation over ... more »

Real revolutions find a role for everyone to play in creating the change. Do what you do best but do it with intention so that it helps bring the changes we need. These yoga folks took their spiritual practice right into the heart of the fight in Turkey and added something important. It's the same way that the Catholic priests and nuns bring themselves into the Navy base struggle on Jeju Island. How can you add something to the coming non-violent liberation of the people and the Mother Earth from the corporate control and domination?

Boozman's ProgressivePunch score since he replaced Lincoln is a ridiculous 3.16 (out of 100) and for the current year, he scores a zero. There are many such references, but all of them seem to have been published after Arnold. The Project Blue Book files list several… and it should be noted that there are fewer listed there today than there were originally… the lone exception, as mentioned, is the Walter Minczewski sighting in April 1947. AIRLINES AND PLANES

Anon at aangirfan - 1 day ago
*Singapore Airlines' A380* Aangirfan's favourite airline was Cyprus Airways. But, in these desperate times, Cyprus Airways is fighting for survival So, we have no favourite airline. They are all pretty uncomfortable. Emirates is probably our least favourite airline, and we would advise you to avoid them if you can. "All the reviews about tight seating in economy are true. With an extra seat in every row compared to most other airlines, its a very cosy affair! "The service was scant. The staff spent most of the BKK-SYD leg hidden away in staff areas. There was definitely a staf... more »

I was asked by a participating member of the H-Diplo/ISSF network to review The American Culture of War. Here is the original link to my review, but it’s off in some far corner of the internet, so I thought I’d repost it here. In brief, I found the book a pretty disturbing rehearsal of right-wing Continue reading

Hehuanshan

*Above is a pan of Puli on Saturday morning, taken from the Cheng Pao hotel. Full size.* Third time is charm, they say. The last two tries at Hehuanshan I failed to make it past Tayuling, unable to sleep above 2000 meters. But I had done them from the Taroko side, which everyone says is harder. This time I did it from the Puli side, which is clearly easier. Would I make it? Click on READ MORE below to find out! Truth is that altitude terrifies me. This time I decided to sleep at 2000 meters, picking an expensive but restful place right next to the 7-11 at 2000 meters above Cingj... more »

An excerpt from a new poetry collection on economics: *An Economist* *Economists study how society produces and distributes its scarce resources. * An economist pretends to know Why things are made and how they flow. He studies men’s biggest woe, He wants it all, what to forego. Like a machine with unseen gears Through greed a solution appears. By making what men hold most dear Profits are earned by serving peers. To boost theirs and the common's gain Become experts in their domains. To make one thing well they attain, Through trade the rest they obtain. But their profits diverge by ... more »

"ALEC’s Attempt Has Failed" - LOOOOVE IT!

2old2care at Because I Can - 1 day ago
Saw this this morning and had to take a peak - as it was on a webpage that is definitely not very progressive. When the media reports the failures of the extremist pro-corporate American Legislative Exchange Council that's important. It means ALEC members couldn't "get 'er done" and that's a very good thing. It means various online media is now connecting the dots to ALEC cut/paste legislation - even though the mainstream media chooses to ignore ALEC. *States KeepRenewable Energy Incentives Despite Push to Repeal* BY: Stateline | Nation | June 24, 2013 By Jim Malewitz SNIP Aft... more »
