Australian Government Bans Political Comment on Twitter
In early 2013, Twitter began actively censoring Australian tweets at the direct request of the government, making Australia “the first modern democracy to identify, filter and ban free speech whilst not in a state of War,” according to a March 15, 2013 report from Polliter.com.
A subsequent Polliter report indicates that “the Prime Minister’s own ‘public record of communications via Twitter’ @PMOPressOffice has been proven to be filtering anti-Labor comment, and suspending users that interact on that site.”Is GE Food Making Pigs Sick?

I've seen stories which link carbon credits to outright fraud which
in some cases perpetuates pollution. Carbon sequestration gets so crazy
that making firebreaks ( brushing ) around cottages and homes in fire
prone areas is fined...and the consequential increased losses are a
consequence of 'global warming.' !

I haven't done a post yet on the new Senator from Massachusetts, mainly
because there was no surprise here, and he's presumably about as
predictable a new Senator as is possible.
I have talked about how Ed Markey is a setback for getting the Senate to be
younger, but if you're looking for trivia, Eric Ostermeier has plenty more:
about older Senators winning special elections, and about Markey's new
record for longest House service before moving to the Senate.

Alberta is facing three immediate and potentially lasting problems - the
prospects of frequent, severe floods; the likelihood of extended periods of
severe drought; and the Carbon Bubble that hangs over the provincial

Wednesday, the price of silver dropped another 5 percent. As I write this,
it is sitting at $18.55 an ounce. On Wednesday it hit a low that had not
been seen in three years. Overall, the price of silver has declined by 34

weather. The fact that they did this is not surprising, we would all prefer

charged solar wind that will hit the Earth's magnetic field square on.
Solar winds are a continuous stream of ions, charged particles. The coronal
hole allows the particles to escape instead of looping back down to the

Researchers at North Carolina State University have not only demonstrated
the ability to remotely control cockroaches with an electronic implant but
have now shown the ability to control the roaches with a Microsoft Kinect.
“Our goal is to be able to guide these roaches as efficiently as possible,
and our work with Kinect is helping us do that,” said Dr. Alper Bozkurt of
NCSU in a news release today.

A European student group known as Europe-v-Facebook (EVF) has filed formal
complaints against major US technology firms for allegedly working with the
National Security Agency (NSA) to secretly collect data on Europeans.
The group specifically named the NSA’s PRISM program in their announcement
and stated that their complaints are aimed at the European subsidiaries of
US Internet giants which worked with the government according to multiple

It's a very good day to be a liberal. The days long people's filibuster at
the Texas statehouse culminated in an epic 11 hour filibuster on the Senate
floor delivered by Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis.
Senator Davis was shooting for 13 hours but fell short when the Republicans
successfully challenged her on procedural grounds, at which point the
people in the gallery took over again and created enough noise to delay the
vote until just past the mandated close of the special session.

opponents, but admit I'm enjoying the moment and wallowing in the joy
exploding all over my internets. SCOTUS delivered two big victories for gay
rights this morning.
The two cases, both decided on 5-4 votes, concerned the constitutionality
of a key part of a federal law, the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),
