Controversial genetically modified super-maize from Monsanto is set to be approved for cultivation across the European Union by late October, officials tell RT. Despite EU regulators last month thwarting the expansion of the world’s largest seed corporation, it appears Germany won’t escape new GMO crops.

It’s the new DDT: a class of poisons licensed for widespread use before they had been properly tested, which are now ripping the natural world apart. And it’s another demonstration of the old truth that those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it.

So an unprecedented appointment of an Australian general to oversee the US "Pacific Command", which is completely unprecedented and raises important questions about the sovereignty of the United States is barely reported in Australia. Just what is teh game being played here? http://ow.ly/nSp9M
What a speech! I usually have a pretty low opinion of hollywood celebs and the tripe they spout, but hats off to Chris (Ashton) Kutcher for dropping these words of wisdom on the youth http://ow.ly/nSz2e

Here's a simple test:

1. Are you concerned about the loss of our main streets, including family-owned retailers and book stores? But do you nonetheless buy online, and order books and other goods from Amazon?

2. Are you upset about the poverty-level wages paid by big-box retailers like Walmart? But do you nonetheless buy from big-box retailers?

3. Are you concerned about the sharp decline in the wages of middle-class workers such as flight attendants, pilots, mechanics? But do you seek and get the lowest-cost discount flights?

4. Are you upset at the loss of good paying unionized factory jobs? But do you buy the cheapest goods you can find, even if not made by unionized workers in America?

5. How much more would you be willing to pay for a garment made abroad but which you knew was made by workers who worked in a safe factory, were paid a decent wage, and were over the age of 14?

I could go on, but you get my point. For many of us there's a disconnect between our values and our actual behavior in the market. Are we simply hypocritical? Maybe. But it could also be because we assume that any sacrifice we might make in terms of paying more would be useless if others don't make the same sacrifice. Under these circumstances, markets can only reflect the values we share if laws ban certain trades that violate those values.

The most interesting political clash coming up in a few weeks won't be between Republicans and Democrats but between regressive Tea Party Republicans and other Republicans -- and the issue will be the regressives' proposal to shut down the government if financing isn't pulled from the Affordable Care Act. Most of the efforts to shame members of Congress who aren't holding town halls during August recess are coming from Tea Party groups and are focused on congressional Republicans who haven't yet committed to a shut-down. According to Karl Rove (whom I rarely quote), appearing a few days ago on Sean Hannity's radio show (which I rarely listen to), Democrats aren't scared of a shutdown. "They want it. This is the one strategy, the one tactic that might be able to guarantee that the Democrats pick up seats in the Congress in 2014." I think Rove is right (first time I've ever agreed with him). So my advice to Tea Party Republicans: Bring it on.

Why did cops kill this 95-year-old in walker?

The elderly man refused the operation, and paramedics attempted to involuntarily transport him for medical treatment. He was sitting in a chair, holding a cane and a shoe horn when police arrived at the Victory Centre senior living facility located just south of Chicago.

The Cook County medical examiner reported that Wrana bled to death internally from injuries caused when the elderly man was shot in the stomach with a 12-gauge shotgun that fired a bag filled with lead shot. The death has been ruled a homicide, according to reports.

( Note : police inadvertently prevented another travesty : involuntary subjugation to status on 'life support' )

RCMP Continue Their Criminal Racist Hate Crimes Against Native Paraplegic Helen Michell and Her Husband Frank

Helen Michell (shown in the photo above) and also known by her native name Telquaa, and her husband Frank Martin, both B.C. native-born residents, have been the victims of ongoing police brutality, stalking, harassment, racial profiling and hateful prejudice for the past twenty-five years and longer and the abuse continues to this day despite endless attempts at peaceful pleading to all levels of government ranging from the provincial to the federal to International agencies such as the United Nations to have the injustices committed against them halted.

The forgotten in Mayflower
Outside the Northwoods subdivision, where 22 of 62 homes were marked for mandatory evacuation, there's scant evidence that anyone from Exxon, the Environmental Protection Agency or the state Department of Health showed any urgency to notify residents that they were breathing an unknown quantity of known poisons. No one in a seeming position to help them make an informed decision about their health or that of their kids and pets did so.

Canada train blast: Lac-Megantic rail firm sanctioned

Anyone else find it strange that he was the chair of the transportation committee and helped pass the "fair railway service act" and is now suddenly going off to work for a rail company? Smells a bit fishy to me.

Activist Post: Child Sex Trafficking and the Oklahoma State Government
www.activistpost.com
Something is wrong in this country, terribly wrong. Many children are going missing from Child Protective Custody supervision, all across this country, with no record of what has happened to the thousands of missing children.
The National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect in 1998 reported that six times as many children died in foster care than in the general public and that once removed to official “safety”, these children are far more likely to suffer abuse, including sexual molestation than in the general population.
That according to the California Little Hoover Commission Report in 2003, 30% to 70% of the children in California group homes do not belong there and should not have been removed from their homes.
…poor parents often times are targeted to lose their children because they do not have the where-with-all to hire lawyers and fight the system. Being poor does not mean you are not a good parent or that you do not love your child, or that your child should be removed and placed with strangers.

President Obama’s Climate Action Plan: Not Even Close

it promises even more climate chaos by promoting frackingmountaintop removal coal miningoffshore and Arctic oil drilling and tar sands exploitation. It also threatens future generations with the specter of more radioactive nuclear power.

In NL - our esteem Natural Resources Minister is playing games. Playing the games of being head cheerleader for Big Oil and Gas. ""They are not
having any problems with it at all," said Marshall. "I was surprised
because I was looking at it negatively because all the information that I've been getting it's been very negative."

But Marshall said what he saw and heard was positive.

"They haven't had any water contamination, they haven't had any problems with water volume, they haven't had livestock dying, they haven't had earthquakes."

Marshall said it was interesting to see the attitude of the local population to this issue, and noted the people of Saskatchewan were surprised at the opposition to the process they've heard from the east.

Marshall said people from the province work on the fracking process, farmers rent land to the oil companies to carry out the work and regulators talk of economic benefits to the province."

Not having any problems eh? Over at Fracking Canada - "Obtaining data on groundwater contamination caused by the oil and gas industry in Canada is nearly impossible because of confidentiality agreements (non-disclosure or gag orders). These must be made illegal.

Full Disclosure: I have thirty years experience working in the oil and gas industry in the western provinces of Canada and own 70 acres of land in Alberta."
Spend some time on this site - its a wealth of information, instead of combing through the backstreet news, where most of it is being buried by the mainstream media and of course Big Oil and Gas.
