A Terrorist Attack on the Washington Navy Yard?

There are reports that up to three gunmen might be involved in an attack at the Washington Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy's oldest shore installation. The mayor of Washington says there have already been a dozen deaths including one gunman. Authorities believe there were likely two, possibly three gunmen involved in the attack.

* This is my article yesterday in thelobbyist.biz. ---------- In the on-going pork barrel scandal and deliberation of the 2014 budget, many sectors are advocating that the money for legislators’ pork barrel or PDAF that has been abolished will be inserted back to the budget as additional funding of the different Departments for various welfare and subsidy programs to the poor. They make this suggestion because they believe that slow but endless expansion of government spending and bureaucracies are fine so long as the poor benefit from it, and that the Liberal government of Presiden... more »

ASEAN 4: Some Economic Data on PH, TH, Vietnam and Cambodia

A friend asked me to give an informal discourse about politics and economics in Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. I am not following closely politics in those two countries, I can only gather a few macroeconomic data. And since Cambodia is sandwiched between Thailand and Vietnam, I also included it in the list that I gave him today. Please note that those data refer mostly to the central or national government. I think local government units (provinces or regions, cities, villages or barangays) and government enterprises data are not included there, at least for the Philippine... more »

Q Day 3: MA Presidential Candidates?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 1 hour ago
An anonymous commenter asks: Why has Massachusetts produced so many presidential candidates? Is it attributable to specific characteristics of its state parties, or a historical fluke? Let's see...we have party nominees in 2012, 2008, and 1988 (plus 1960); also, the 2012 winner was one of two runners-up in 2008, and there were runners-up also in 1980 and, sort of, in 1992. Yes, that seems like a lot. My inclination is to say that it's mostly just a fluke, although I suppose it's possible that there's some political culture explanation that might have some weight -- if there is, for... more »

Q Day 2: Speaker Boehner?

This is a great question, since I often say that Boehner is a pretty good Speaker, but don't always really explain what I mean. So, what would make Boehner a failure? First and foremost, if his own conference turned against him (especially early in his tenure). That would be pretty good evidence. On The Syrian Front, The World Is Not Out of The Woods Yet: Prepare For New False Flags To Be Blamed On Assad

Why is the Syrian government *declaring victory* after the U.S. and Russia made a deal about the status of its chemical weapons? This is an obnoxious and stupid move. No victory is a victory if it is not decisive. Don't the Syrian officials know that full-scale war against them is still on the agenda? The Emerging Police State

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 7 hours ago
It all began with the War on Drugs and racial profiling. If you're looking for the origins of the new police state, Chris Hedges writes, that's where you should begin. Both developments made it easy to target minorities. Any police state begins with an attack on an easy to identify minority: The unrestricted and arbitrary subjugation of one despised group, stripped of equality before the law, conditions the police to employ these tactics against the wider society. “Laws that are not equal for all revert to rights and privileges, something contradictory to the very nature of nation... more »

Understanding the Context for Anti-Cultural Corporatism in Mexico

Jim Horn at SCHOOLS MATTER @ THE CHALK FACE - 1 day ago
It takes a while for the real news to get out, but this is must see stuff for understanding the corporate education push in Mexico, which is being supported by Gates and his version of CorpEd Without Borders. Spoiler alert: it’s about corporate-led privatization, ending workers’ rights, imposing a test that requires the poorest village […]

“Welcome to the Brave New World”

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
*“Welcome to the Brave New World”* by Cory Morningstar "Neil Postman, social critic, compares the worlds of “Nineteen Eighty-Four” and “Brave New World” in the foreword of his 1985 book, “Amusing Ourselves to Death.” He observes: “What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egotism. Orwell feared that the truth ... more »

A Dystopian Future

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 1 day ago
George Orwell and Aldous Huxley envisioned nightmarish worlds, which were the result of 20th century trends. Now American economist Tyler Cowan has produced a vision of the dystopian world of work in this century. Richard Reeves writes: It might be called "Brave New World 3.0."—a new projection of a world of machine-driven alphas and lesser beings, from betas to epsilons. The book is a smart and cruel projection of the world Cowen sees coming. In fact, he thinks it is already here. It's not a vision which should make anyone comfortable: What will that work be like? What obligat... more »

*"NSA Control Freaks"* by William Manson "Those who are attracted to the non-alive are the people who prefer ‘law-and-order’ to living structure, bureaucratic to spontaneous methods, gadgets to living beings, repetition to originality… They want to control life because they are afraid of its uncontrollable spontaneity; they would rather kill it than expose themselves to it and merge with the world around them.” - Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm1 "The hyper-focused obsession with dominance and control is, according to many psychoanalysts, symptomatic of a deep-rooted fear of sponta... more »

FIGHTING FOR CONTROL OF SEEDS

SUNDAY SONG

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
David Petraeus may be regretting taking a teaching position at the City University of New York system. A video recently posted to YouTube shows the former director of the CIA and retired Army general being followed down the street on his way to his first class by a small, but passionate group of students. It’s hard to make out a lot of what they’re saying, but there’s a lot of “war criminal!” And a general sense that they don’t like him very much. This comes after Petraeus’ salary was lowered from a controversial $200,000 to just one dollar to teach a course at the honors college... more »

Talking about Scotland and the BBC, we buy a Scottish Sunday paper called *The Sunday Post* each week[I put it like that for any of you from even further south of the border who may never have heard of it] and it contained a wee article today which is somewhat germane to Edward Stourton and Samira Ahmed and their respective trips tae Glasgow this weekend: *Beeb lesson not as billed* With the Lib Dems convening in Glasgow for their conference this year, the event is literally a stone's throw from the BBC's Scottish HQ at Pacific Quay. 'Sunday' from Pacific Quay

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
Time for this week's review of Radio 4's *Sunday* - a special edition from Glasgow. What drew Edward Stourton to the city? It certainly doesn't appear to have been the lure of a million shops. (Well, it felt like a million to me after I was dragged round most of them recently). Nor was it the city's fascinating mix of old and new architecture (the splendour of Kelvingrove v that thing which looks like a hypodermic needle). No, it was (a) the Liberal Democrat Conference (well, who could have resisted that?), (b) the installation of a new Catholic archbishop in Scotland to replace ... more »

brief open letter to richard dawkins: you have no right to speak for anyone but yourself

laura k at wmtc - 1 day ago
Dear Richard Dawkins, If the sexual abuse you experienced as a child did not leave you with lasting scars, that's very fortunate for you. However, you have no right to speak for anyone but yourself. Your insensitive remarks may cause survivors of sexual abuse great pain *and* they may confirm perpetrators' rationalizations of their own abuse. So do us all a favour and shut the fuck up. Yes folks, a full seven years after first appearing in comments on this blog in the guise of a female fan, the freak we call Mags is still spewing his bile on a regular basis. We delete most of the comments without reading, but once in a while, it's good to share. A couple of weeks ago the *Charleston Daily Mail* speculated that if West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant enters the race for the open Senate seat, the Democrats will have a chance to hold onto it. Citing a telephone survey, they said Republican Shelley Moore Capito got the thumbs up from 45% of the voters and Tennant from 40% (which is within the margin of error), with 15% unsure. Yesterday it became clear that Tennant will be running, probably officially announcing her candidacy Tuesday. The Republicans are already trying to paint her as a raging liberal.
