First, on "fillibuster." As Josh Huder pointed out on twitter, there
certainly is a filibuster involved here. That's correct, but the filibuster
is, essentially, the objection to the motion to proceed, which forces a
cloture vote and sets the clock for the cloture vote. That's the
filibuster. By all accounts, the filibuster will be defeated at that point.
Cruz's speech is occupying a (very large!) portion of the time within that
filibuster; if he wasn't speaking, either someone else would be or the

Iraq’s New 5-Year Development Plan Sets Nice Goals But Will Have Little Effect Upon Policy
Iraq just issued its new 5-year National Development Plan (NDP). Its main
goal is to use the country’s vast oil wealth to diversify the economy
towards agriculture, industry, and other sectors. It has the same basic
goals as the previous plan. The problem is that the NDP is not a real path
of action for Baghdad to follow rather it just sets broad goals for Iraq.

Unknown Script- Have you seen this before?
Hi again everyone! So over the past few months during the energetic work
I've been doing I have seen several documents. Some are in known "english"
alphabet, but in the past three weeks or so I have had several incidents of
seeing a completely unknown type of script. A few weeks ago I went through
about 10 minutes of "pages" of this script flashing in front of my eyes-

Moving
Hi Everyone!
In a few weeks its my intention within the next 30 days that I will be
relocating to Morocco for an indefinite stay to help out with some things.

Nazi Takeover In North Dakota?
Leith, North Dakota is on the map. Actually it isn't *literally* on the
map, just in the news. The town was founded in 1910 along a railroad line
that was abandoned in 1984. Since there were no highways going through
Leith it started losing population. At its height in the 1930s there were
174 people. Today there are 24. It's in Grant County (pop.- 2,394), named
for Ulysses S. Grant. Last year Grant County gave Romney 1,012 votes (73%).

Yes, the 2016 nomination battles are on, and reporting on them is a great
idea.
That said: let's not get ahead of ourselves. It's too early to game out
Iowa, much less the events after that. It's too early to declare a
candidate (say, Marco Rubio) has already lost his chance. It's not too
early to say how policy positions are affecting the contest right now --
but it's still too early, for most issue areas, to have a real sense of how
things play out in 2015 among party actors, and certainly too early in most
cases to know how they play out among voters in 2016.

A bizarre 7pm news on BBC Radio 4
The usually most politically correct and pro left wing 7pm BBC Radio 4 news
bulletin today was rather odd. First the report on Ed Miliband's conference
speech concentrated on the fuel price proposal but had someone from
Centrica as the only comment. Second the report on the Nairobi terrorist
attack referred to the perpetrators as 'terrorists', not 'militants'.

DIGGING IN THE DIRT
- I brought in wood this morning and filled up the racks near our two
wood stoves. The weather is turning here, getting colder at night, and
time to prepare for the change.
- I also started digging up one of our potato beds - rough on the back -

Larger forces (environmental, economic, technological) are going to have to
blindly guide blind humanity towards a different form of social
organization.
We are incapable of doing it ourselves. (By "we" i mean the better sort of
humanity, like us, who act as our species' rational conscience.) Our

I was recently discussing the topic of minimum wages with a friend who

So how much would you pay for a tablet, or would you rather have a Phablet,
or just a good smartphone? Does size matter? Do you have to be been seen
with a 10”, 8”, 7” or a 5.5” device?
We find ourselves constantly asking what we want and what is the best fit

While discussing the mall attack in Nairobi and a church bombing in
Pakistan this weekend a friend said "well, it's a religious war". That
aside gave me pause.
Growing up in Canada in the 1960s the very concept of religious war seemed
impossibly ancient. Yes, there was Northern Ireland and Israel's battles
but those were easy to view as political or ethnic rather than religious
disputes. Northern Ireland divided up people along religious lines but

James Naughtie: Mr Impartiality?
Last Wednesday marked the start of a year's worth of BBC coverage of the
September 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
Leading Radio 4's coverage of the story will be *Today*'s very own
Scotsman, James Naughtie. He will still be doing *Today*, as well as
presenting a twice-weekly stint on Radio Scotland's *Good Morning Scotland,
*and acting as Radio 4's chief reporter on the story. So a busy year for
him then.
