So far today, over in no-we're- not-completely-bonkers House news, the
House Republicans prepared a debt limit/funding bill, took it to a
conference meeting, sang "Amazing Grace" (presumably more of a Diane
Chambers version than you would find in the House Democrats' caucus, no?),
found out they didn't have the votes, and then threatened to pass something
and then leave town -- so the Senate and Barack Obama would have to choose
to go along or go passed the Thursday-ish deadline.

Space, healthcare, vandals and loonies
I heard a rumour the other day that, due to the current US government
shutdown, the Mars Curiosity Rover was switched off. It hasn’t been. NASA
is currently maintaining a skeleton staff of around 500 people, some of
whom are working on the rover. One would think Juno, Dawn and New Horizons
haven’t been switched off, but who knows.
The current shutdown is an act of vandalism. If the Democrats have anything
about them as a party they should use this to shut the Republicans out of

As soon as I have solved the "colour crisis" making its way across the
Internet (inc. MyOpera) I'll be back with my study of the latest "Internet
fad": bleak colours and unreadable webpages! Without trickery I wouldn't
have been able to write this for the simple reason that the MyOpera blog
editor puts white text on white backgrounds, unless I switch off "Allow
pages to show their own colors" in FireFox. That of course kills
readability of YouTube text-content and many other websites. This is a

Since the day I decided to go to graduate school and change my career(s),
my mind has reeled with questions about the future. When will I be able to
quit my horrible law-firm job? When will I get a professional position at
the library? When I get it, will I succeed, and will I enjoy my new work?

Fort McMurray Today reports that 270 unionized welders and pipefitters
contracted to the Husky Sunrise tarsands project were laid off and replaced

TV exposed what looks like a fairly egregious example of folks in what is
essentially a taxpayer-funded charity, the Kohanga Reo National Trust,
treating taxpayers’ money like their own—spending it on trips, fuel and

Debt ceiling collision risk is being underestimated
Two weeks ago, I discussed the partial government shutdown that was coming
and it indeed came and turned out to be the non-event I expected.
However, we were also aware of another threat which is related but much
larger, perhaps by a factor of 100-1,000: a collision with the debt
ceiling, a legally imposed upper limit on the amount of the U.S. public
debt. We're now just 3 days away from the expected D Day even though the
U.S. debt clock tells us that the threshold at $16.699 teradollars has
