English: Seatown beach looking east This view,...English: Seatown beach looking east This view, (complete with old car wheel) is of the cliffs from Seatown towards Ridge Cliff and East Ebb rocks. It is an area of regular landfalls (as can be seen from the precarious overhanging cliff top) and it is serious folly to go too near the cliffs, either at the top or at the bottom. Just nearby, at the top of the cliff, a fencepost dangled from the end of a wire fence, where once had been solid ground! (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Predictable Failure of School Improvement Grants

John Thompson at Schools Matter - 2 minutes ago
In the second annual data dump on the eve of the anniversary of the assasination of President Kennedy, the Duncan administration has again announced the disappointing results of its School Improvement Grant (SIG.)Once again, the SIG's failure is being released in the "take out the trash" end-of-the-week news dump. In retrospect, I was naïve about the SIG and its roots. My experiences teaching in the inner city, and in participating in whole school and whole system reform were crystalized by Mass Insight's "The Turnaround Challenge." Graphs of the Day: Major US Hurricane Drought Continues

Data here. The US good luck with respect to hurricane landfalls -- yes, good luck -- continues. The graph below shows total US hurricane landfalls 1900 through 2013. The five-year period ending 2013 has seen 2 hurricane landfalls. That is a record low since 1900. Two other five-year periods have seen 3 landfalls (years ending in 1984 and 1994). prior to 1970 the fewest landfalls over a five-year period was 6. From 1940 to 1957, every 5-year period had more than 10 hurricane landfalls (1904-1920 was almost as active). The red line in the graph above shows a decrease in the number of... more »

GOP melts down under nuclear option

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 11 minutes ago
I'm seeing speculation that the GOPers forced Harry Reid's hand as part of some eleventy dimensional liar's poker move. Maybe it's true that McConnell thinks Harry changing the rules slightly to get governance moving again is going to give him some kind of great cover if he ever gets the Senate gavel back and proceeds to immediately annihilate the filibuster altogether. Of course that assumes McConnell will survive to see that day. Looking at his current re-election chances, that's not necessarily a sure bet. Whatever sort of devious GOP plot this *might* be, for the moment their p... more »

JFK magic bullet: irrationality of conspiracy theories

Today, it's been 50 years since the assassination of JFK. The murder took place on Friday, just like today. For generic two years, the probability is 1/7 that a given day occurs on the same day of the week. However, for a 50-year gap, the probability is approximately 1/3 because each of the 50 years shifts the day of the week by 1 plus 11-13 (mostly 12) from leap years (it may be just 11 because about 3/8 of the 50-year intervals include a non-leap year like 1900). *A historical movie from that day, 15 minutes. I have written before about the gross waste of taxpayer monies on retail in the St. Louis region. According to the East-West Gateway Council of Governments (p. 18), governments in the bi-state metropolitan area pumped about $2 billion worth of subsidies into retail projects from 1990 to 2007, but only saw a net increase of 5400 jobs, meaning that each low-wage, low-benefit retail job cost the cities of the region $370,000 apiece. Aartsen et al. Although the origin of this flux is unknown, t... more »

You Cannot Depend On the Emergency Room for Free Care (Or Much Care At All But You Can Depend on Bills and Collections Agents) and Tribute to Real JFK Assassination Investigators Amid MSM Frenzy

It's All Capitalism All the Time, folks. Try to keep that in mind whenever you read an essay about health care in the U.S. (or actually about anything in the U.S.). After all, what did you think Paul Wolfowitz and Barney Feith were doing after the fire bombing of Iraq? Helping the wounded? It seems we've been made into a country of sociopaths who see people in need of aid every day all

ISRAEL LOBBYING CONGRESS TO SUPPORT WAR AGAINST IRAN

During all of the time the administration has been negotiating together with the so-called P5+1 team for a deal with Iran lower sanctions, Israel has been demanding any such deal be contingent on Iran dismantling its nuclear program and facilities entirely. Netanyahu hasn’t budged one bit from this demand and nor have his hard right Zionist supporters both in Israel and their supporters in America and around the world. While Secretary of State John Kerry has been beavering away working on a deal that would partially relieve sanctions on Iran in return for a halt to further enrichmen... more »

Now that Garry Trudeau's "Alpha House" TV show is (sort of) on the air, we're finally getting new "Doonesbury"s

[*Click to enlarge (a little)*] *by Ken* I don't know why I'm so uncomfortable now that Garry Trudeau's DC TV-fantasy is, well, not on the air, but in the Intertubes (it's Amazon's debut series). As the master of *Doonesbury*, Trudeau is a veritable god to me, and as a case in point I offer today's strip, from the "recap" series with which GT is apparently weaning us off the summer's and fall's reruns, while he's been playing with his TV show. Holiday shopping is a lot of work, especially when we focus on Eco-friendly gifts. We have to research companies to make sure that their products are actually "green", browse their sites & catalogs for items which will please the receiver, and then be willing to pay a bit more because high-quality, environmentally-safe products typically cost more. Let me make it a bit easier for you! The newly redesigned Reduce Footprints' Special Offers page, which has been relocated from Facebook to this blog, has some great gift ideas. DCCC's Forked Tongue In New Mexico

New Mexico's second congressional district-- which is bigger than some states-- is not going to be easy for any Democrat to win next year. There's a relatively popular Republican incumbent, a very, very rich one, and Democratic and independent voters will need a reason to turn him out of office. A Republican-lite candidate of the DCCC brain trust variety is not going to be able to do it. This misunderstanding about love is perhaps THE MISUNDERSTANDING. Agape is unconditional SELF-love. To love without condition means to accept all facets of existence. Reid shuts down Republican obstruction

It was a good day for democratic governance. Admit I didn't think he'd go through with it. Happy to be wrong. Harry Reid made history today. After years of threats and warnings, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and his Democratic majority on Thursday executed the "nuclear option" to eliminate the filibuster for executive branch and judicial nominees, except for the Supreme Court. Of course, everybody has an opinion but it's probably not going to restore the Senate to a functional body. Obama Is Being Led By Republicans Down The Wrong Path On Social Security, The Same Way He Was On Healthcare

I can only hope that Majority Leader Reid considered that one day, when the Democrats are the minority party in the upper chamber, they, too, will need the filibuster for judicial appointees in case a Republican President wants to appoint Orly Taitz or Robert Bork's rotting corpse to a federal bench. But a couple of hours ago, after a false start last July 16th, Harry Reid used the long-threatened but never-used nuclear option and blew up the filibuster for presidential judicial nominees (save for the Supreme Court). The Senate has gone nuclear. My first notes are up, over at Plum Line. I'm sure I'll have more on this, but one quick note. Soon after the key vote, Harry Reid asked for, and received, unanimous consent for committees to meet. That's normally a routine request. The fact that it remains a routine request, even immediately after the Democrats acted, is a quick answer to one question: no, Republicans will not "blow up" the Senate to retaliate for majority-imposed reform.
