Salon’s latest way to hate en masse!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 36 minutes ago
*SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2013* *Young analyst tackles the boomers:* In highly tribalized times, hating en masse can be quite au courant. Examples: You might hate everyone who votes the wrong way. Plainly, they’re all racists. You might hate everyone from some city. Dallas, the city of hate! Sweeping over-generalization is the gateway to this pleasing act. And as Salon helped show us this weekend, you can hate whole generations too! You don’t even have to know what you’re talking about! Last Friday, Daniel D’Addario decided to tackle the always unpleasant boomers. We refer to his stir... more »

BBC News = the Scottish police service

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 1 hour ago
Here's an intriguing stat, figured out (from FoI responses) by Bill Rogers at *Trading as WDR.* The BBC says it employs 19,649 staff on permanent or fixed-term contracts, with 38% employed in the corporation's news division. Get your calculator out and that works out as 7,466.22 people working in BBC News. [That .22 guy (or gal) must have been taken on to meet the BBC's equality and diversity targets.] The intriguing bit comes when you compare that figure, as Bill does, to similar figures in other contexts: The police service in Scotland has a staff of 7,500, as does the London ... more »

Teacher Quartering: Four Reasons Why Teachers Avoid, or Leave, High Poverty Urban Public Schools

Angel Cintron Jr. at @ THE CHALK FACE - 1 hour ago
Introduction Teaching within a high poverty urban public school is challenging, to say the least. Ten Reasons the United States Government Must Be Abolished

As negotiations over Iran's nuclear program continue in Geneva, I was lucky enough to do interview with Steve Rendall for CounterSpin, the weekly radio show of the vital media watchdog group, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR). You can listen to it here. My interview, which follows one with the great Trevor Timm, begins at the 18:35 mark and runs about eight and a half minutes. Here is

Suddenly, it's 1963 again

Libby Spencer at The Impolitic - 21 hours ago
Bit late to this but can't stop thinking about it. Of all the iconic images of the dreadful day of Jack Kennedy's assassination, this is one that burns the most vividly in my memory. I saw this unfold live on the television as an 11 year old who loved my President and the First Family and was struggling to make sense of this shocking event. doTerra On Guard Beadlets Giveaway

Debra Hawkins at Housewife Eclectic - 21 hours ago
This giveaway is sponsored by My Natural Family. All opinions are my 100% own. I can't ignore it any longer. Winter is coming and with the changing weather comes sickness. There is never a good time to be sick, it tends to just seize you and force you to stay home. My husband's days off are pretty much all accounted for next little while with family plans and a new baby coming, so he really can't get sick this winter. We all have plans we don't want to miss, so doTerra has released On Guard Beadlets. We absolutely LOVE these in our house. They make it really easy to use doTerra ... more »

What Mattered This Week?

Jonathan Bernstein at A plain blog about politics - 22 hours ago
Not the only thing that mattered, but I'll go with the obvious one: the Senate going nuclear is a very big deal. What didn't matter? I'll stick with filibusters, and agree with Adam Ramey that if the legislative filibuster goes, it's not going to matter much...as long as there's divided government. Although even then, "less than you think" could still be a big deal, so I suppose this isn't a very good "didn't matter." Sorry; I've been so focused on the nuclear business that I hardly know what else happened this week, and all the things I can think of actually did matter. But maybe ... more »

Wintering in

Baby, it's cold outside. 19F yesterday morning, 22 this morning. The vines from missed potatoes that sprouted this fall have flopped over and are turning to slime. The calendulas finally bit the dust. Squirrels, who have madly squirreled away what looked like record numbers of acorns this year (it's what is called a "mast" year) have gone suddenly quiet. The chard is holding up so far, but is the likeliest of the greens to give up of what we have out there. Kale, collards, cabbages, beets, mangels, radish, turnips, Brussels sprouts and even onions are looking good. I picked a few ... more »

Golf, Race and Class: Don't Blame the Caddy

*"So I’m grateful, Bill, as well for the advice and counsel that you’ve offered me, both on and off the golf course... "* I have advice too. Given the extremely long and complex history as relating to Golf, Race and Class - don't dress like The Caddy and get photographed. Especially when your predecessor has on his Brainy Specs. But then, we all make mistakes... "Now, last, but never least, we honor a leader who we still remember with such extraordinary fondness. He still remembers as a child waving goodbye to his mom -- tears in her eyes -- as she went off to nursing school... more »

*The MV Seaman Guard Ohio, on which six British former soldiers were arrested, on 12 October 2013.* With elections coming up in India there is a risk that certain western security services might stage a false flag terror attack in India. The attackers who killed 166 people during the 2008 attacks on Mumbai reportedly arrived by sea. Six British former soldiers have been taken into custody in Chennai in India. what i'm watching: ken burns' "prohibition", an excellent documentary

laura k at wmtc - 1 day ago
This week we finished Ken Burns' excellent documentary "Prohibition," and I recommend it highly to everyone who enjoys history. Most of us know at least something about Prohibition, especially how it failed, but I'd bet that much of this film will be eye-opening. And, if you aren't a regular viewer of Ken Burns' documentaries, this three-parter could serve as a wonderful introduction to his signature style. It's on US Netflix, on PBS, and probably at your local library. I did know that the early movement against alcohol was deeply rooted in the early US women's movement. Women's ant... more »

Paul Craig Roberts: "China is going to let the dollar decline further in value." "This blow to the dollar in addition to the blows delivered by jobs offshoring and the uncovered bets in the gambling casino created by financial deregulation means that the US economy as we knew it is coming to an end." Translation: When the dollar ceases to be the world's reserve currency, your dollars may buy as little as half as much as they buy now.

CREATING THE CONVERSION PROCESS

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
Six folks turned up at various times yesterday during our 90 minute vigil at Bath Iron Works. We were there when the afternoon shift knocked off and the evening shift began so we saw lots of workers drive by. Our message was primarily about building something different at the shipyard. BIW has been there more than 100 years and the city's whole identity is wrapped up in shipbuilding so its a hard sell. But what we have heard from conversations with workers over the years is that as long as they have a job they wouldn't mind building rail systems or wind turbines. The union t... more »

U.S. Government And Their Mainstream Media Celebrate A Half Century Of LYING About The JFK Assassination

Big Dan at Big Dan's Big Blog - 1 day ago
We are watching the U.S. government & mainstream media, one in the same, celebrate 50 years - a half century - of lying to the public about the assassination of JFK. It points out a multi-generational continuum of media & government lies as most of the original liars are dead. This also points to a controlled media spanning generations. It's also proof that both parties work together to COVER-UP false flags and we have no democracy and no choices in rigged elections. First: Let me start off with this fact: 75% of Americans do NOT believe the "official story" of the JFK assassinati... more »

Let me tell you a little something about me #edreform

Since 2009, in professional terms, I’ve suffered some fairly significant losses. I pursued a PhD in 2005 and completed it in 2009, thinking that higher education would lift me to some higher plane in terms of my understanding and practice of my chosen discipline. Understanding it brought me, indeed. And improvements to my practice, certainly, […]
