It's the last day, and they're really close to meeting their funding goal. This case is our best chance to stopping tar sands expansion.
The government's support for the tar sands has been unwavering. Now it's time for the courts to decide.

Jeffrey Smith and Tom Malterre Dicuss GMOs and Gluten

Experts agree that the recent increase in gluten-related disorders cannot be explained by genetics alone and that there must be some environmental trigger. In the following interview, Jeffrey Smith, internationally recognized expert on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and Tom Malterre, expert in clinical nutrition and a gluten-free lifestyle, simplify and clarify the potential connection between GMOs and gluten sensitivity.

Global food control has nearly been achieved, by reducing seed diversity with GMO (genetically modified) seeds that are distributed by only a few transnational corporations. But this agenda has been implemented at grave cost to our health; and if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) passes, control over not just our food but our health, our environment and our financial system will be in the hands of transnational corporations.
Today's news from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.):

Stopping Corporate Welfare: All the welfare that the U.S. government provides to real, live human beings pales in comparison to the billions and billions in handouts to corporations and big-business, The Thom Hartmann Program and Think Progress reported, such as approximately $52 billion to Big Oil. Sen. Sanders and Rep. Keith Ellision have proposed legislation to end this corporate welfare at taxpayer expense. "At a time when fossil fuel companies are racking up record profits, it is time to end the absurdity of American taxpayers providing massive subsidies to these hugely profitable fossil fuel corporations,” Sanders said.

The ABLE Act: A bicameral group in Congress is lobbying for the passage of the The Achieving a Better Life Experience Act by the end of the year, The Hill reported. The bill aims to provide the disability community with the chance to provide and save for themselves through tax-free savings accounts, and it has earned bipartisan support in Congress, ranging from Sen. Sanders to Sen. Mark Rubio in the Senate.

Protect Local Farms: Vermont lawmakers criticized FDA’s produce safety and preventive controls regulations for threatening to “disrupt Vermont’s small, local and diversified farmers and food hubs with large fees and expensive testing and booking requirements,” in a Nov. 22 statement, Food Chemical News reported. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy, along with Rep. Welch have urged the FDA to rewrite the Food Safety Modernization Act.

American Anxiety: American workers are living with unprecedented economic anxiety, four years into a recovery that has left so many of them stuck in place. More than six in 10 workers in a recent Washington Post-Miller Center poll worry that they will lose their jobs to the economy, surpassing concerns in more than a dozen surveys dating to the 1970s. Nearly one in three say they worry “a lot” about losing their jobs, also a record high, according to the joint survey, which explores Americans’ changing definition of success and their confidence in the country’s future, The Washington Post reported.

Global warming isn’t to blame for the disaster in the Philippines

According to news reports, Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines a few days ago, is now overshadowing the UN climate summit in Warsaw. Some delegates and climate campaigners have been quick to suggest that global warming was to blame for this disaster.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

When it comes to cyclones and tropical storms, something quite remarkable has happened this year. The 2013 Atlantic hurricane season, which forecasters had predicted would be more active than normal, turned out to be a complete washout. For the first time in 45 years, no major hurricane made landfall. This year has also been marked by the fewest number of hurricanes since 1982, and the first since 1994 when no major hurricane formed. In fact, it has been one of the weakest hurricane seasons since modern record-keeping began about half a century ago, U.S. weather experts explained.

So, how can the same alleged cause, global warming, inhibit hurricanes on one side of the world while triggering typhoons on the other side?

FRACKED NATURAL GAS IS NO 'BRIDGE FUEL'
Bombshell Study Finds Methane Emissions From Natural Gas Production Far Higher Than EPA Estimates
By Joe Romm, Climate Progress, Nov. 25, 2013

A major new study blows up the whole notion of natural gas as a short-term "bridge fuel" to a carbon-free economy.

Fifteen scientists from some of the leading institutions in the world — including Harvard, NOAA and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab — have published a seminal study, “Anthropogenic emissions of methane in the United States.” Crucially, it is based on “comprehensive atmospheric methane observations, extensive spatial datasets, and a high-resolution atmospheric transport model,” rather than the industry-provided numbers EPA uses.

Natural gas is mostly methane (CH4), a potent heat-trapping gas. If, as now seems likely, natural gas production systems leak 2.7% (or more), then gas-fired power loses its near-term advantage over coal and becomes more of a gangplank than a bridge. Worse, without a carbon price, some gas displaces renewable energy, further undercutting any benefit it might have had.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study by Scot Miller et al takes the unusual step of explicitly criticizing the EPA:

"The US EPA recently decreased its CH4 (methane) emission factors for fossil fuel extraction and processing by 25–30% (for 1990–2011), but we find that CH4 data from across North America instead indicate the need for a larger adjustment of the opposite sign."

In other words, natural gas is not a bridge to a carbon-free or climate-safe future. In fact, absent both a serious price for carbon and very strong, enforceable national regulations on leakage, natural gas is a gangplank.

Despite six announced visits by U.S. astronauts between 1969 and 1972, the Moon remains a riddle to scientists in many regards. The solutions to these riddles could indicate an alien aspect of our familiar Moon.

Called “the Rosetta Stone of the planets” by Dr. Robert Jastrow, the first chairman of NASA’s Lunar Exploration Committee, scientists had hoped by studying the composition of the Moon, to resolve some of the mysteries of how our planet and solar system came into existence.

However, six Moon landings later, science writer Earl Ubell declared, “… the lunar Rosetta Stone remains a mystery. The Moon is more complicated than anyone expected; it is not simply a kind of billiard ball frozen in space and time, as many scientists had believed. Few of the fundamental questions have been answered, but the Apollo rocks and recordings have spawned a score of mysteries, a few truly breath-stopping.”

Among these “breath-stopping” mysteries or anomalies as scientists prefer to call them is the fact that the Moon is far older than previously imagined, perhaps even much older than the Earth and Sun. By examining tracks burned into Moon rocks by cosmic rays, scientists have dated them as billions of years old. Some have been dated back 4.5 billion years, far older than the Earth and nearly as old as the solar system...
