Meet North Carolina's Newest Democrat: Jason Thigpen

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 17 minutes ago
There are no moderates left in the Republican House Caucus. The "best" you'll get is a mainstream conservative willing to stand up to Tea Party extremism from time to time-- or a libertarian who may be good on an important issue or two but is still, essentially, a raving lunatic on everything else. Walter Jones (R-NC) is kind of a mix of the two. He is a basic mainstream conservative with some libertarian tendencies. He also has voted for progressive bills in the House more frequently than any other Republican this year-- and more frequently than 9 right-wing Democrats-- John Barr... more »

An excerpt from, *"Rebels lose ground to Assad forces in Syria war; Free Syrian Army official Akaidi resigns"* by Liz Sly, The Washington Post, November 3: The resignation Sunday of a top leader in the U.S.-backed Free Syrian Army further underscored the extent to which rebel infighting is undermining the effort not only to topple President Bashar al-Assad but also to hold on to territories won by the opposition in more than two years of conflict. Egyptian Military Shuts Down Show of Egypt's Jon Stewart

Saman Mohammadi at The Excavator - 2 hours ago
Is the Egyptian military run by idiots? Do these generals even understand where their society is heading? I was all for the coup. Morsi was raising up a storm, calling Jews descendents of pigs and spouting aggressive rhetoric against Ethiopia for the construction of its Renaissance Dam. The generals quieted things down, especially with Ethiopia, so that was a good thing. But you have to rule intelligently. And shutting down the show of a popular talk show host who is watched by millions of young Egyptians isn't the smart way to go forward. Source: CNN.

Taxpayer-sponsored poverty entrapment

*Guest post by Dominic Costello* The New Zealand Welfare solution was envisioned and eventually introduced at a time when *real* poverty and actual starvation was a day to day reality for some Kiwis. However, as *real* poverty and actual starvation have diminished, the Welfare Solution has done the reverse, evolving to a level its designers would not have imagined possible. Over time, the umbrella of of welfare coverage has expanded significantly faster than the growth in population. And little wonder. Since the beginning of the academic year at Egyptian universities, the Muslim Brotherhood protest movements on various campuses nationwide left a very clear picture of their destructive behavior. Police not giving Rob Ford "Special Treatment"

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 11 hours ago
Rosie DiManno’s most recent column suggests there may be one law for ordinary people and another for the Mayor of Toronto. She asks why, if apparent drug deals were going on, the police didn’t arrest everyone. First, perhaps the suspicious transactions were not drug deals. I grant you meeting at night in parking lots seems sketchy but not everything is as it appears at first blush. Second, and more important, police do not bust every drug buy they see. The purpose of a major surveillance project is not to nail a few street buyers for a possession charge but rather to trace a street ... more »

*Vanderbeke v. O'Connor*, 2013 ONCA 665 deals with the admission of a pleading as an exhibit during trial. It is not uncommon to cross-examine a party on their pleading at trial (whether that is an effective technique is another issue) but few cases have considered whether it is proper to admit the pleading as an exhibit. Here the Court held such admission was proper; it should be noted here that the pleading was in a related matter and was drafted by the party without counsel. Truthiness and popular consciousness

This is a small example but, according to this poll, people are typically more likely to think the BBC is left-wing than right-wing; 27% of people think it is left-leaning, 14% think it is right leaning, 37% think it's neutral and 23% don't know. I'm not sure which is the most disturbing figure. I suppose it must be that almost quarter of people can't tell the difference between left and right. This is truthiness in action. The fact is popular consciousness is a wreck. People will not rise up/resist/whatever until they have the remotest grasp on what is actually being done to them.... more »

Aboriginal Rights - Who Qualifies to Claim

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 15 hours ago
The definition of who is, or is not, an aboriginal is fraught with controversy (consider Grey Owl). That said, in Powley 2003 SCC 43 the Supreme Court defined who may claim rights as Métis and that gives some guidance: *Métis Identification* The Court did not set out a comprehensive definition of Métis for all purposes. It did, however, set out the basic means to identify Métis rights-holders. Ten anti-union resolutions were passed at the Conservative convention in Calgary. They are aimed at making Canada a "right to work" nation. It's wise, therefore, to examine what has happened in the nation which pioneered right to work legislation. Right to work is the brain child of the Republican Party -- the source of inspiration for Harper Conservatives. On Friday, in *The New York Times*, Paul Krugman wrote that Republicans have declared war on the poor: Republicans in leadership positions try to modulate their language a bit, but it’s a matter more of tone than substance. You probably saw the anti-union, food stamp-cutting governor of Ohio, John Kasich, publicly bitching the other day that his political party is engaged in a merciless war against the poor. “I’m concerned," said Kasich, "about the fact there seems to be a war on the poor. That, if you’re poor, somehow you’re shiftless and lazy.” He may well have had Republican House budget chairman and class warrior Paul Ryan in mind.
