"How A Former General Lost His 'Political Virginity'"

LeDaro at LeDaro - 33 minutes ago
This was a front page headline on The Huff Post yesterday. Retired general Andrew Leslie might have expected the verbal jostling that comes with the rough and tumble of politics — after all, both of his grandfathers served as Liberal defence ministers. (CP) | CP . *Lost his 'political virginity'* *Leslie may have been prepared for the scrutiny that began last weekend with Conservative MPs questioning his 2012 moving expenses, which totalled $72,225.86 — the bulk of which was likely realtor fees. Woody Allen and Believing Victims

thwap at thwap's schoolyard - 58 minutes ago
I thought it was creepy when Woody Allen married his adopted step-daughter. I believed that both Woody and Mia Farrow must be weirdo fucked-up people. So when Mia discovered that Woody had molested his own kids right after his betrayal, and that these allegations were successfully denied in the courts, I put her accusations down to a desire for revenge. Why am I talking about these two celebrities? Because the issues involved effect all of us. When Dylan Farrow reacted to Woody's life-time achievement award from some organization, by insisting that he had molested her, my response w... more »

Yank That Chain

I'm confused. How can President Obama both claim that he is flushing his chained CPI method of starving old people and at the same time promise that, if the Republicans get hungry enough, he'll snake his austerity plan right back out of the toilet? And that he'll place millions of lean human carcasses right back on the dining table for the delectation of the rabid plutocrats? I mean, I've heard that dogs occasionally will eat their own vomit, but this latest bout of rank political posturing being sold as pragmatism is just grossing me out. KNOWING THE BACK STORY

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 hour ago
In Venezuela the CIA is funding and directing protests against that government - a government the US corporate oligarchy has long wanted to take down. It's about the oil in Venezuela. Not all protests are truly on the mark. Some protests, like in Venezuela, are doing the work of the corporate elite. It helps us to know the back-story. The *Democracy Now* video just below about Ukraine tells a similar tale about the street protests there. It might look like the Occupy movement in one sense - but in the real world a significant part of the street violence is coming from long-st... more »

Jim Flaherty's budget may have been full of happy talk. But, Frank Graves writes, Canadians -- particularly young Canadians -- are not happy. They know they've been had: The simple fact is that the agenda of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government is no longer about an incremental, gradual shift away from a progressive state to a model of minimal government embodied by neo-conservative Reaganism or Thatcherism. The public may now see trickle-down economics as a cruel hoax — but it still seems to be the theory informing the current government’s approach to the economy. Stephen... more »

I know that after I've said a sad goodbye to the Comision de Accion Social Menonita and have returned to Canada, I will talk fondly to my friends about having had the amazing opportunity to travel around so much of Honduras through my work in all seven regions of CASM. But tonight I’m in a down-market hotel room in teeny La Campa, sitting under a hideous fluorescent doughnut light while dining on weird little coconut sticks I packed in my bag knowing that I’d be dead bored by Day 3 with the limited food selection here. I don’t know about you, but when I tune in to the infantile ‘debate’ about obesity – about who to blame when folk get fat and how ‘someone must do something” (for “someone” read “government,” and for “something” read coercion) – I find it disturbing that fatties and pollies alike find common cause in removing personal responsibility from their respective equations. If you're a fat bastard and you don't want to be, how about you stop blaming vending machines, your school, your parents, your genes and just try the 'don't-eat-so-frigging-much' diet.
