Republicans Demand "Job Creation"-- And That Means Higher Unemployment And More Pain For American Families

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 42 minutes ago
Boehner and Cantor have a song they want to sing you about jobs This week, a slightly inebriated Boehner was whining about some hostage crisis he's cooking up-- for the national debut, if I remember correctly-- and demanded the price of not driving the U.S. government into default on the debts Congress had run up would be… job creation. Job creation? Everyone likes job creation, right? Well, no, actually. Republicans have steadfastly tried to undermine the economic-- for purely partisan reasons-- by sabotaging every single jobs creation bill President Obama has proposed. And the Ayn ... more »

There's nothing like an Olympics in your little burg to make the authorities heel to. Back in the old days, the world press that descended on their soil was alone enough to make even the most inhuman tyrants temporarily cease and desist their brutal tactics. Before and during the Berlin Olympics of 1936, Adolph Hitler personally ordered a moratorium on the roundup of gays and systemic crackdown on Jews. Conservative Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has been quoted in some of the newspapers today for his criticism of the BBC. Some of the coverage make it sound as if he savaged the BBC - which he didn't; in fact, he was rather charitable towards the corporation. (Rather *too* charitable I'd say.) This then is what Mr Grayling actually said: I think the real problem for the BBC is not that there is an intentional bias at senior levels, not that it is institutionally biased against us. But it’s that there is a cultural leaning towards the Left. The people who work at the BBC have a... more »

The billionaire chairman of Equity Group Investments backed up fellow rich guy Tom Perkins, who set off a firestorm when he recently compared the "progressive war on the 1 percent" to Nazi anti-Semitism in a letter to the Wall Street Journal.* Read more here.

Obamacare Emancipation Proclamation

Karen Garcia at Sardonicky - 1 day ago
When you have a cumbersome free-market health insurance reform package like the ACA instead of, say, Medicare for All, confusion and disinformation are the inevitable byproducts. You really do have to be an economist to fully understand all the ramifications of a program that covers some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. The latest outbreak of mass confusion revolves around headlines falsely claiming that the Congressional Budget Office had announced that there will be a net loss of some two million jobs as a result of Obamacare. What's actu... more »

Pacific Rim Job

(By *American Zen*'s Mike Flannigan, on loan from Ari.) It's time I wrote about the Transpacific Partnership, aka the TPP. It's not as if I hadn't known about its existence. But being a political journalist in the 21st century necessarily involves some intellectual triage, in weighing how much attention one scandal should get over the countless multitudes of others. It's literally an embarrassment of riches. Yet journalists still have a responsibility to the people even if only to justify our remuneration. And it can't be said the utterly worthless mainstream media have bee... more »

KIPP Uses Funds Shortage As Excuse to Shut Two Galveston Schools

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 1 day ago
Having collected hundreds of millions of federal grants, public education dollars, and tax-exempt philanthrocapitalist cash, KIPP Inc. is the richest corporate charter chain in the world. Yet when Galveston Schools finally decided it was unfair to give KIPP $1.5 million more per year than it does for the same number of its public schools, KIPP decided that the public teat is no longer fat enough to justify keeping its two Galveston schools open. When you look at test scores by these two schools, one has to wonder if there were other considerations for closing them. It is easy enoug... more »

Absent an explanation an unlawful search is unconstitutional

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 1 day ago
*R. v. Mandziak*, 2014 BCCA 41: [72] The fact that there was no evidence or a paucity of evidence to support the Crown’s attempt to justify the unlawful seizure was not *per se *probative of whether the police acted in bad faith. It merely left the seizure as unlawful with no explanation for it. What was probative was the fact the seizing officer acted knowing that he was seizing documents he was not authorized to seize; in fact, documents he specifically had not been authorized to seize. In the absence of any explanation, how can it be said that the officer was not acting... more »

YOU WANT A JOB?

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
When Keystone XL's top job recruiter comes to town, he reveals just what jobs the controversial oil pipeline would really create. Oil executives like to claim that the Keystone XL pipeline would create thousands of jobs. But in a project fueling so many environmental and health risks, only one man is honest enough to say exactly what those jobs would be. (Hint: they're not construction.) It's true, Keystone XL has a job for you! But the question is: do you really want it?

The Insurgency Makes It Personal, House Bombings In Iraq

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 1 day ago
As Iraq’s insurgency has rebuilt itself it has become bolder in its attacks. One of its new tactics is to bomb houses. Sometimes these are improvised explosive devices (IEDs) placed outside someone’s residence, but more often than not they are bombs placed inside houses that destroy them. This is a much more personal and intimidating type of operation, because it lets the targets know that the militants know where they live, and that they can lose their property and families, not just their own lives. In January 2014, 46 houses were bombed across the country. The vast majority o... more »

ALEC Mission Has Lost Focus

2old2care at Because I Can - 1 day ago
We are currently watching the implosion of the RepubliCONS at a national level as the Tea Party factions tears the party apart. One thing any group needs is cohesion and cooperation among its members. Another thing any group needs is a purpose and mission that is coherent and consistent. Those things are not happening for the RepubliCONS at the national level and ALEC may be beginning to experience the same thing. This entry is just one example - other examples include ALEC members who are at each others throats - like Cantor and Boehner - - - or Enzi and Cheney - - there's more, lo... more »

Choice in Canada vs. No Choice in Texas

In Canada, a brain-dead pregnant women is being kept on life support until her fetus, dubbed "Baby Iver", can be delivered. In Texas, a brain-dead pregnant woman was similarly kept on life support to incubate her fetus. Can you spot the difference? The Canadian partner and family believe that the mother would have wanted it this way and, indeed they want the process to continue if possible, notwithstanding potential damage to the eventual child. In Texas, however, the parents, paramedics both, had discussed this sort of horrible possibility and had decided that life support should ... more »

Don't Worry… Franklin's List Is Never Going To Turn Into Anything Like EMILY's List… It's Not In Their DNA

Of course, when EMILY's List started their incredible work, I never thought they would turn into the anti-progressive monstrosity that have morphed into either. Franklin's List has nothing to do with them, other than the last name. Franklin's List is a brand new PAC dedicated to electing public officials with professional science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) backgrounds. Yesterday, Rob Ford announced that he would not attend World Pride in Toronto because "I'm not going to change the way I am." Judging from his continuing escapades, it would seem that the public can take that statement to the bank. And, after reading Robin Doolittle's book *Crazy Town*, Tasha Kheiriddin writes that Ford is anything but mayoral: The Fords — according to Doolittle — live in a world of thugs and drugs. From high school on, the four Ford siblings — Kathy, Randy, Doug and Rob — were enmeshed in the drug culture in various ways, as users and (allegedly) in the case of... more »

Two Decades Is Enough to Show Value-Added Is a Scam

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 1 day ago
by Joey Garrison at The Tennessean: Tennessee’s largest teachers union has turned against the policy of including student *learning* gains in the evaluation of teachers, a flip that shows its growing discomfort with a major Race to the Top reform. When Tennessee applied for $501 million in federal Race to the Top funds in 2010, a critical part in landing the coveted grant was that competing stakeholders reach accord on major education policy overhauls. That especially meant the Tennessee Education Association, which agreed to sign on to a *new* teacher evaluation system that based 35... more »

*How smearing micro-fat on your joints can ease arthritis* *Sounds hopeful* A radical new treatment for arthritis has just appeared on local pharmacy shelves - a gel that contains no medication. It is smeared, not rubbed, on to the skin, where it apparently slides through the pores and into the painful joint, where it begins to replace the natural lubrication lost through the disease. It takes around a week to provide relief - about the time it takes you to use up a single tube on one joint. The gel, Flexiseq, contains tiny spheres made of the same sort of fat, called phospholi... more »
