Talking of bees...
This morning's *The Living World *reported on the tiny bullet-shaped *Osmia
bicolor, *a sort of mason bee which seeks out empty snail shells for a
nest.
This was another delightful programme from Trai Anfield.
Trai was walking around the chalk downlands of Dorset with naturalist John
Walters. And not just any old chalk downlands.
No, they were investigating the hillside directly above the the Cerne Abbas
giant [the famous chalk figure that depicts the Palestinian Authority
president in a decidedly frisky mood].

As we've made 2014 'The Year of *Newsnight*' here at "Is", I've been
intrigued to see what effect former *Guardian *deputy editor Ian Katz's
determined attempts to revive the show have actually had on *Newsnight*'s
poor ratings....

They've fallen by a further 5%, according to *Broadcast*.

to analysis by a senior US Air Force officer.
The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter being built for British and US forces is
based on outdated ideas of air warfare, it is claimed. The aircraft could
be unable to evade enemy radar and be too expensive for long campaigns.
The critique in the US Air Force’s own journal concludes that the new
fighter may even have “substantially less performance” than some existing
aircraft.

Kiowa helicopter squadron at JBLM to be inactivated

bite out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord this year, as a 400-soldier helicopter
squadron will be shut down.
The plan to inactivate the Kiowa helicopters and crews of the 4th Attack
Reconnaissance Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment became inevitable when
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced in February a proposal to phase out
the Army’s entire Kiowa fleet.
Lawmakers in the the U.S. House did not challenge Hagel’s proposal last
week when they considered the 2015 defense budget, so the plan is moving
forward.

Nuclear-powered submarine launched

launched.
Artful, a 7,400-tonne, 106-yard-long attack submarine, was edged out of its
giant construction hall at the Devonshire Dock Hall in Barrow-in-Furness,

Artful, the third of seven highly complex Astute-class submarines being

Godzilla (2014) is a new U.S.-Japanese movie based on the paradigm of the

I was so happy to see that Paul Song had been elected to a non-profit board
I serve on. Friday was our annual meeting and I got to meet him in person.
He's done an incredible job as Executive Chairman of another organization,
Courage Campaign. He started running Courage when Rick Jacobs, the founder,
became Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles. I was thrilled to learn that Paul has

Graduation
The last contractual duty of the academic year is to attend graduation. We
walk well over a thousand so the college rents a venue in downtown Southern
City. The CS faculty meets early for dinner, and Southern Man went even
earlier to do a little geocaching.

Hawaii missile launch tests shield readiness
[image: Aegis Ashore site]A missile launch next week from Kauai will test
the readiness of a planned ballistic missile defense shield for Europe.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports (http://is.gd/mRcyFF) the launch will
take place from the Aegis Ashore site at the Pacific Missile Range Facility.
The equipment and procedures will be replicated for the European defense
system scheduled to become operational in Romania in 2015 and Poland in
2018.

Thailand to receive first UH-72A in April 2015
[image: UH-72 Lakota]Airbus has produced the first of six UH-72A light
utility helicopters for the Royal Thai Army (RTA), officials at the
company's production facility in Columbus, Mississippi, said on 14 May.
The aircraft will be delivered in December to the US Army, which will
transfer it to the RTA, according to a company spokesman. The remaining
five aircraft will be built in 2015.
Thailand requested six UH-72As through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS)
process in 2013. The contract is worth USD77 million and would be the first

Iranian regime ballistic missile work complicates nuclear talks

regime is pursuing development of ballistic, posing an acute challenge to
six powers negotiating with Tehran to rein in its nuclear program, Reuters
reported.
The Iranian regime insists that missiles should not be part of the nuclear
talks, but a senior U.S. official made clear this week that Tehran's
ballistic capabilities must be addressed in the negotiations since U.N.
