The BBC and less than half the story

Craig at Is the BBC biased? - 9 minutes ago
This may take a little time and reading but it may be worth the effort to compare and contrast the reporting of the BBC and the *New York Times *regarding today's murders by Hamas. Here's the BBC website's take [note in particular the sub-headline and the paragraphs that follow it]: *Gaza: Hamas says 18 suspected informants executed* Hamas sources in Gaza say 18 people suspected of collaborating with Israel have been executed. The killings came after an Israeli air strike killed three senior Hamas leaders on Thursday. Two more Palestinians died in overnight strikes. Israel says ... more »

Dumber and Then Huffman

Jim Horn at Schools Matter - 32 minutes ago
Is dumberer a word? TN's state ed chief and TFA cult member, Kevin Huffman, told the New York Times yesterday that TN would not back down on using invalid, unreliable, and unfair methods to evaluate teachers in Tennessee. Do "the best interests of children" really require us to ignore science, common sense, and public opinion? Some states will continue to use test results in teacher evaluations. In Tennessee, for example, Kevin Huffman, the commissioner of education, said the scores would remain a part of performance reviews. In an email, he added that he hoped states would make... more »

LAUNCH ALERT

The real-life missile silo setting really helps make this short film something special. A nuclear engineer lets his art hobby get in the way of his job—but when something goes awry, it may just save him. Writer and director David Soll, who produces political ads as his day job, funded *Silo* through a successful Kickstarter campaign and got the rights to film in a decommissioned Cold War-era missile silo in the Adirondacks.

OK that's from a Brazzers parody porn film and not a particularly good one, although I have obviously only seen the above preview. For a more realistic parody porn Doctor Who, there is a film by Woodrocket that nails the look rather better. The following links to the four parts of the film Doctor Whore are obviously very NSFW Part 1 has the Matt Smith Doctor and a worryingly convincing Amy Part 2 has the Matt Smith Doctor and a not quite so convincing River Song Part 3 has the David Tennant Doctor and a fairly convincing Rose Tyler Part 4 has a rather disappointing female Doctor,... more »

'Newsnight' and the 'Laughing Jihadi'

*Should Newsnight have given a platform to the depraved British-Pakistani 'laughing jihadi'?* On Wednesday night *Newsnight *featured a report from BBC reporter Secunder Kermani ("Disillusioned revolutionary, serial daydreamer, sporadic narcissist, @SecKermani") during which the views of a British-born IS fighter were broadcast to a sleepy BBC Two audience. Sometimes Bipartisanship Leads To A Plot Against The People Of This Country By The Beltway Political Elites

This diagram shows the ideological spectrum of the Members who supported the Grayson amendment on police demilitarization George Bush demanded-- hysterically-- that Congress pass the TARP giveaway to banksters that came close to wrecking the economy. But it can't only be pinned on Bush; both Establishment Beltway parties were complicit in that catastrophic vote. Boehner voted for it and he was rewarded with the Speakership. Three Republicans were elected U.S. Senators: Blunt (MO), Kirk (IL) and Boozman (AR) and Mary Fallin was elected governor of Oklahoma. I bet virtually none of the... more »

New Terror Narrative Emerging: ISIS Supports American Resistance

KIEV TAKES OUT MUSEUM AS THEY ESCALATE SHELLING

Russia's Foreign Ministry has called the humanitarian situation in Eastern Ukraine appalling. Cities have been shelled by the military every day this week. RT's Maria Finoshina reports from Lugansk. The crime of those in eastern Ukraine? They wanted to vote for their own mayors and governors rather than having them appointed by corrupt oligarchs in Kiev. They wanted to be able to speak their historic Russian language and not have it banned by Kiev. They want the Nazi's running the show in Kiev to stop killing them.

Is the tragedy of Ferguson serving as a national teaching moment? Maybe… at least for people open to learning. Nate Silver made a point the other day, for example, of how most police don't live in the cities they serve-- especially not white police serving in minority areas. In Ferguson, for example, "more than two-thirds of the civilian population is black. Only 11 percent of the police force is… Black and Hispanic officers are considerably more likely to reside in the cities they police than white ones." And Ferguson is anything but an outlier. *Paycheck For Terrorism: $5,300 For Suicide Attack -- The Signal* For the first time, startling details are being made public about the millions of dollars funneled from Middle East charities to Islamic terrorists and their families. The money was used to reward terrorists and their families after attacks on Israelis and U.S. nationals visiting Israel between 2000 and 2005 during the second intifada or Palestinian uprising. The evidence was presented today in a landmark case in New York federal court. Three hundred U.S. nationals claim Arab Bank knowingly provided financial servi... more »

*More British Muslims Fight For Islamic State Than Britain -- USA Today* LONDON — It is likely that there are now more British Muslims fighting for the Islamic State than for Britain's military. Britain's Ministry of Defense confirmed to USA TODAY that there are approximately 600 British Muslim servicemembers in its armed forces of almost 200,000 people. Official government estimates put the number of British Islamic State fighters operating in Syria and Iraq at up to 800. ISRAEL: NO BETTER THAN ISIS OR AL-QAEDA

ISIS, or just IS (Islamic State) as they now call themselves, as well as al-Qaeda are, of course, Israel’s arch enemy – as well as much of the rest of the world. But is Israel any better than their arch enemies when it comes to committing crimes against humanity? And, just because Hamas also happens to be an Islamic organisation, can it really be compared with IS or al-Qaeda? History: “The Real First World War”

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 1 day ago
*“The Real First World War”* By Bhaskar Menon “Europe’s “Great War” of 1914-1918 does not deserve to be called the “First World War.” That title should go to the first real global conflict, Europe’s genocidal invasion of other regions that began in the final decade of the 15th Century. European historians have sought to downplay the ferocity, extent and significance of that earlier conflict by treating it as a diffuse historical process, but if we who were victims accept that view it disables our understanding of everything that has happened since then. As few people are likely to... more »

Latest Right Wing Excuse For Their Contemptible Racism: Unsubstantiated Claims That The Murderer Has An "Orbital Blowout Fracture of the Eye Socket"

Does this guy look like a racist to you? I have to admit, I had never heard of Republican blogger Jim Hoft-- better known as "Gateway Pundit"-- until Media Matters dubbed him the Dumbest Man on the Internet. In 2010 they pointed out that his unique incompetence had been responsible for "almost every inane story that bubbles up in the conservative blogosphere." "[E]ither willfully dishonest or staggeringly inept," Hoft "has proven that he has absolutely no vetting process for the sources he cites, and apparently has a hard time with basic reading comprehension." And, no one should be... more »

Harper's ideology now presented with "acceptable casualties" ...

Dave at The Galloping Beaver - 1 day ago
Shorter Lisa Raitt The deaths of 47 people, the devastation of an entire Canadian community and the subsequent years of horrendous nightmares are acceptable collateral damage in the Harper Conservative war on reality. No amount of losses or devastated lives can prevent us from moving forward with our dangerous and seriously flawed ideology. This may be just as "sexy" as Raitt's drooling over

We the people are ordered to constantly walk or we're threatened with arrest during the Mike Brown protests! It's the same unlawful order day after day! No rights of assembly for anyone in the new constitution being written in the streets of Ferguson! She will not comply!

*THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 2014* *Least likely guest on the planet:* We’ll admit it—Amanda Ripley drives us a little bit nuts. Last year, Ripley published a ballyhooed book about public schools, The Smartest Kids in the World. It was a gigantic favorite of all teacher-hating elites. We’re willing to assume that Ripley’s intentions are good. But in some ways, we’d say that her book included the most cherry-picked facts on the planet. (Below, we’ll recall what she did.) This Tuesday, we were listening to The Diane Rehm Show on our car radio. Like most people, we like Rehm. She previewed... more »

A TERRIBLE BEAUTY IS BORN

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
We can't let this go away. Ferguson, Missouri or the many other places blacks are gunned down by cops. We can't let Gaza go nor Ukraine nor Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Africa - its all about the rape of resources and the elimination of unneeded people. It's global genocide by the corporate elite. Obama is so quiet - he makes more noise after a white reporter is killed by ISIS. Obama promises revenge and sends bombers to Iraq. In the case of Ferguson Obama sheepishly utters a few words of defense of media rights to report on protests but admonishes protesters for stepping out of... more »

COPS ON RAMPAGE IN MISSOURI

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 day ago
Another killing of a black man by cops in St Louis, Missouri. This one though was recorded on the spot. The ruling corporate oligarchy has given the police the green light to get the race war going. What else could it be? Notice how after shooting the man about ten times they handcuff the dead body.

Jon Donnison is utterly ludicrous.

sue at Is the BBC biased? - 1 day ago
I don’t think the ostrich actually does bury its tiny head in the sand 'in denial', but we do. Where there is a pile of something we don’t agree with most of us find it easier to label it ‘rubbish’ and dismiss it altogether than to take even a furtive little peek at it. So that’s what we do. Sometimes it’s understandable. For instance I don’t trouble to check out bonkers or antisemitic websites. Also, I don’t engage with arguments wholly constructed on pro-Palestinian /anti-Israel principles because even though their reasoning may well seem credible to people whose fundamentals co... more »

WHY DID POLICE IN NEW ORLEANS BUY SNOW CAMOUFLAGE?

Mark Daniels at Global Political Awakening - 1 day ago
Uh, say again? Picture: Pentagon *by* MATTHEW CHAMPION | i100 No, it’s not the start of a riddle. But ever since events in Ferguson thrust the apparent over-militarisation of police in the US into the global limelight, a little-publicised law allowing law enforcement agencies to buy surplus military grade weaponry and equipment has been scrutinised. *The New York Times* collated information from the ominously-named Programme 1033 and posted it online. New Orleans’s *the Lens* subsequently found that police in two counties in the city – known fo... more »

Supplemental: Fact-checking Lawrence regarding the shooting!

bob somerby at the daily howler - 1 day ago
*THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 2014* *Cable star’s sense of the law:* Did Darren Wilson shoot at Michael Brown while Brown was trying to flee? We don’t know the answer to that question. As the New York Times has reported, some witnesses have said that he did. Last night, Lawrence O’Donnell savaged the Times’ front-page report, calling it “a terribly misleading, badly crafted story about witnesses to the killing of Michael Brown.” In the passage shown below, O’Donnell described the report’s “most egregious passage”—a passage in which a witness describes Wilson shooting at Brown as he fled.... more »
