*"In the Beginning"* "Sometimes simplicity rises like a blossom of fire from the white silk of your own skin. You were there in the beginning you heard the story, you heard the merciless and tender words telling you where you had to go. Exile is never easy and the journey itself leaves a bitter taste. But then, when you heard that voice, you had to go. You couldn't sit by the fire, you couldn't live so close to the live flame of that compassion you had to go out in the world and make it your own so you could come back with that flame in your voice, saying listen... this warmth, this unbea... more »

"Biology says that we are who we are from birth. That our DNA is set in stone. Unchangeable. Our DNA doesn't account for all of us though, we're human. Life changes us. We develop new traits. The risk of course is that we can change too much to the point where we don't recognize ourselves. Finding our way back can be difficult. There's no compass, no map. Do you love truth enough to continue seeking even when it hurts, when it reveals aspects of yourself (or human society, or the universe) that are shocking, complex and disturbing, or humbling, glorious and amazing - or even, when truth is far beyond human mind itself? It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones. But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sh... more »

Even if you don't know who Glen Campbell is, you should watch the movie about his farewell tour, "I'll Be Me," tonight

KenInNY at DownWithTyranny! - 11 hours ago
*I'll Be Me, which had a limited theatrical release in 2014, makes its TV debut tonight on CNN.* *by Ken* The post title isn't facetious. James Keach, director and co-producer of *I'll Be Me*, the story of a "goodbye tour" that was scheduled for 5½ months when he got involved but stretched to 51 concerts over some two years, has already encountered the question "Who's Glen Campbell?" (If anyone needs reminding, the "official trailer" clip provides some reminders of how big a star he was, both as a recording artist and as a TV personality.) But then, when James co-produced the 2005... more »

Commentaries, Analysis, And Editorials On The Greek Debt Crisis -- June 28, 2015

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 12 hours ago
*Bloomberg editorial:* *Greece's Choice of Disasters* *After months of confusion and indecision over Greece and its debts, a moment of clarity may finally be approaching. The referendum called for July 5 by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras promises some kind of resolution. For that, at least, one should be grateful. There is little else to celebrate. Getting to next Sunday without a financial breakdown in Greece looks impossible; Greeks are already lining up at ATMs. And the choice confronting them when they vote will be between two very bleak alternatives. This mess is a textbook c... more »

June 28: the meaning of morality

Graeme Decarie at The Moncton Times@Transcript - Good and Bad - 12 hours ago
About a dozen years ago, I read a book whose title I have long forgotten - something like "The hundred greatest people in world history". One can, of course, argue forever about what greatness is, and whether this hundred in particular was the greatest. But they all, without doubt, had qualities of greatness. And there was certainly a bias for the western world. But still- there was an undeniable feature about those chosen. Two peoples stood out as remarkably prominent, though both were only a small part of the population even of the western world - Jews and Scots. And that's not s... more »

Sunday Masochism Live

sue at Is the BBC biased? - 12 hours ago
Radio 4’s Sunday programme was but an amuse bouche served before the meal proper, which was Sunday Morning Live; quite a meal it was too. It was roughly to do with Ramadan and I.S. First we have the permanently startled looking Sian Williams who’s supposed to keep order. The guests inflicted upon her by the BBC speed-dial department don’t make matters easy. They tend to favour verbally incontinent Muslims like Ajmal Masroor, who can’t bear to listen to anyone but themselves, and who often keep going without even bothering to do that. In the middle sat Sian wearing a skimpy skirt m...more »

The Real Reason the US is now agin' the Confederate Flag

greencrow at Greencrow As The Crow Flies - 12 hours ago
*Confederate Battle Flag is now being persecuted in the USA* In his Sunday *RANT *today, Northern Truthseeker brought up the newly-minted, staged and contrived controversy around the Confederate Battle flag in the US. He says: .... To me, the idea of removing the Confederate "Stars and Bars" battle flag from every place across the American south is beyond ludicrous... The "Stars and Bars" was never the official flag of the Confederate States of America, but was actually first incorporated as the battle flag of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and has since symbolized res... more »

*Rivera Sun author of The Dandelion Insurrection is originally from Maine* I'm almost finished reading the book *The Dandelion Insurrection* by fellow Mainer Rivera Sun who now lives in New Mexico. I thought I'd share a few of her golden words from the book. "We've been taught greed," Zadie told people. "We were sold consumption as a measure of our worth, but look around you! When you have nothing, you are still worth more than the millions of dollars locked up in a bank! Money is a pale substitute for the riches of our hearts. MI6 BROUGHT ABOUT THE END OF THE DUCHESS OF YORK’S MARRIAGE TO PRINCE ANDREW By GIOVANNI DI STEFANO By 1992, the marriage between Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson (the Duke and Duchess of York) was faltering. The Duchess was with various men including Texan multimillionaire Steve Wyatt, while her husband was away on royal duties. They agreed to separate in January 1992, but in August 1992, surreptitiously taken photographs of John Bryan, an American financial manager — apparently in the act of sucking on the toes of a topless Sarah in Southern France — were published by the Daily M... more »

Ben Hecht, Howard Hughes and Nazi Flying Discs in Antarctica

"It is believed that Ben Hecht and William Faulkner, both good friends of producer Howard Hawks, contributed to the script. However, long-standing rumors that Orson Welles contributed to the dialog are believed to be untrue." "Howard Hawks asked the US Air Force for assistance in making the film. He was refused because the top brass felt that such cooperation would compromise the U.S. government's official stance that UFOs didn't exist."

"Big City Lib" Channels Paul Calandra

Fresh off his hacktastic support for the indefensible, cowardly Liberal Party support for Bill C-51, "Big City Lib" now channels the cretinous, disgusting harpercon hack Paul Calandra, by chanting that the NDP isn't above the law and should pay back what they spent on the satellite offices. The NDP should pay its bills just like anyone else. Until they form government, and then we all ride free until the banks kill the party. But seriously. Complying with Law would show folks that the New Democrats knows how to pay off debts like responsible people, rather than just racking them... more »

Propaganda On Steroids

Silly, sleepy me. Until I read all about it in today's *New York Times*, I'd been totally, unforgivably oblivious to having just lived through a monumental event called "The Liberal Spring." In the space of just one week, a tsunami from "the left" has apparently changed the entire ideological landscape of America! Jonathan Martin explains it all to ignoramuses like me: *A cascade of events suggests that 2015 could be remembered as a Liberal Spring: the moment when deeply divisive and consuming questions of race, sexuality and broadened access to health care were settled in quick s... more »

31 Of The 34 "Democrats" Who Voted Against Obamacare Were Ousted From Congress By Angry Constituents

I've never been a tremendous fan of the ACA (Obamacare)-- I favor letting everyone buy into Medicare (single payer universal)-- but I think it makes the dysfunctional American health care system a *lot* better than than it was before 2010. And I was gratified on Thursday, lying in a hospital bed at City of Hope hooked up to spinning machines taking out my blood to harvest stem cells and then recycling the blood back in me, when the Supreme Court voted 6-3 to uphold the subsidies that make Obamacare functional for the most needy families among us. It should surprise no one, though... more »
