The French Revolt

Bruce K. Gagnon at Organizing Notes - 1 hour ago
France is really rocking with labor protests and those by youth who see little future for themselves. The French determination to sustain these protests over time is both inspiring and tactically smart - as they recognize that one off events just won't do the job. Sadly we don't get to see many videos that show anything but the violence in the streets - this one above at least gives us some glimpse into the larger issues which the French movements are upset about. I hope to find more videos about what is happening in France. I would appreciate anyone that can point me in the ... more »

Film Review: X-Men: Apocalypse

Daniel Stack at 19th Level - 1 hour ago
Katniss and Sansa's big adventure? I'm probably an interesting viewer for X-Men: Apocalypse. While I followed the X-Men and related titles throughout the 1980s, by the 1990s doing so became rather difficult, with a few gazillion interconnected X-books. I'd pretty much stopped trying to follow the X-books by the time Apocalypse became a major character. I'd witnessed him in the early issues of X-Factor but that was about it. With that background, my wife and I saw X-Men: Apocalypse this evening. Though I could certainly nitpick, in broad strokes we both enjoyed it. It takes place... more »

The police should mind their own drinking business, not ours

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 hour ago
The grey ones are trying to limit Auckland’s night life. Auckland police are calling for council to set bar closing times at 3am. Council want it to remain at 4am. Punters and bar owners? Well, most of us would like to have a drink when we would like to have a drink, really. Eric Crampton reviews the standard arguments for forcing bars to close earlier. He has found in summary *that changes in regulated hours of operation shifted the timing of harms with no particular effect on their severity.* That’s a guarded way of saying that punters would get an hour less fun for no effe... more »

Tavis Smiley's Smart Interview With Bernie

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 hour ago
Bernie has been doing a media blitz here in California-- and the polling in the primary has changed radically. A couple weeks ago, all the headlines about the horse race were about how Hillary was leading by double digits. The contest to win the June 7 race is now a dead heat. I wondered, though, who in Bernie's campaign suggested he do the John and Ken circus on KFI. That was a bad idea. John and Ken are babbling clowns of a Trumpian nature. They epitomize what's wrong with the media in America and their show is the last place for a serious candidate to go. I think Bernie caught... more »

Homeless people in American cities are being ’rounded up and disappeared’ by FEMA operatives, according to a suicide note left behind by a government insider. Describing the phenomenon as ‘human street sweeping’, the insider says the abduction of homeless people is the first stage of a FEMA plot to turn 800 internment camps across the country into fully operational prisons. The government insider, who we can now reveal was a US Customs Agent based in New York City, wrote a lengthy suicide note exposing plans the government has for its people. Students Lashed 99 Times For Attending Graduation Party In Iran

Edmondo Burr at Your News Wire - 10 hours ago
Dozens of young college students who were caught dancing, celebrating and drinking alcohol at a mixed graduation party, were flogged by the “morality police” force in Iran. More than 30 students were arrested, interrogated and lashed 99 times within 24 hours of their college graduation party, where students had met under a potential volatile situation. Iran’s morality police were discretely keeping an eye on the situation and interfered when they saw morality was about to shatter to smithereens. EU: all publicly funded science papers free since 2020?

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 10 hours ago
Some EU authorities have presented an ambitious plan. The Competitiveness Council and the Dutch EU presidency were involved. (On July 1st, Slovakia will take over the EU presidency.) In four years, all scientific papers resulting from publicly funded research should be available to everyone for free. I tend to say that it's a natural plan. The public funds the research so the public may expect to have access to all the results. Well, it's only the public at some territory that has paid and the whole world will have access to the results – so the benefactors and the beneficiaries ... more »

BWorld 60, Classical liberal, neoliberal and anti-liberal

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 11 hours ago
* This is my article in BusinessWorld last May 25, 2016. Political labels sometimes tend to create more confusion instead of clarifying things on philosophy and ideology. One reason for this is that certain advocates and campaigners of particular philosophies are themselves confused of what they are talking about, and yet they project to be the leaders and articulators of those political philosophies. Take liberalism. There are perhaps a dozen varieties of this philosophy, from the classical to social liberal to American liberal and so on. To help us differentiate and redefine som... more »

Last Tuesday, May 24, I took a boat from Manila going to Bacolod. This is after nearly 2 decades of riding the plane when I go back to my province in Negros Occidental. I was surprisingly happy that I took that decision. Things are so different now compared to two decades ago, from Manila's seaport terminal to the boat itself. This was my boat, 2GO's St. Therese. Huge boat, a smaller version of those giant cruise ships. I wanted to take the plane, went to Ticket Express days before. Economic Climate Change-- A Guest Post By Bob Poe

By now, everyone knows we need to focus on climate change. The threat is real, the science is clear, and the effects are happening now. Combating climate change will take action from Congress, and from people willing to hold them accountable. But there’s another threat facing our nation that’s just as serious. One that could swallow a generation of American workers, like climate change threatens to swallow our coasts. And one that comes with a great opportunity for the future. I call it “economic climate change.” With a median wage of $29,781, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says... more »

As prime minister, Stephen Harper didn't accomplish much. Andrew Coyne writes that Mr. Harper's legacy is pretty thin: Any honest examination of Harper’s nine-odd years in office would find a government that wandered all over the intellectual map, boasting of its commitment to balanced budgets while adding $150 billion to the national debt, talking of its respect for free markets while launching 1970s-style industrial-subsidy programs, praising the military while denying it adequate equipment, and so on. DISCLOSURE is Coming?

There has been some talk inside the UFO community that DISCLOSURE is on the horizon with Hillary Clinton saying that if she wins the election, she’ll release the hidden UFO files. May 28: A headline about a story! But there's no story.

Graeme Decarie at The Decarie Report - 21 hours ago
Today's headline story is a real headline story. The provincial government is delaying any decision on fracking. Unfortunately, neither the government nor the story have much to say about why. The Liberals say it's the fault of the Conservatives for delaying a decision. Well, okay. So how does that make it right for the Liberals to delay? And where is all the research to prove that it should not be delayed? Or to prove it is safe to go ahead? There's no social license? That's just bafflegab for saying that the government might lose the next election if it approves fracking. Hey! A... more »

Information Warfare is not "Optional"

Nations without information warfare capabilities in the 21st century are like nations without armies and navies in the 20th century. They are defenseless. *May 29, 2016* (Ulson Gunnar - NEO) - Imagine a nation without an army, a navy or an air force. What would its prospects be of defending itself against even moderate aggression? Is Uber the Real Monopoly?

Hardly of course. In fact the emergence of Uber is the direct result of monopoly practices exercised for almost as long as we have had the automobile and likely the hackney long before all that. The mere fact that taxi licenses became so valuable tells you that such practises are in force. We have the same thing here in terms of milk quotas as well. Current State of the Sea Ice Cover

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
The data is getting better. We have essentially lost half of our perennial sea ice since 1978. The actual cover is mostly caused by annual ice and this feeds the natural reservoir provided by the perennial ice. All this suggests that present trends will eliminate perennial ice by 2050 while annual cover will substantially contract. It should be stable at that point. We do not have good enough data to say when and how reversals take place. Recall that the Medieval warm period lasted centuries. This feels like the same scenario is working through.
