When we discuss energy in public, let’s stop using the misleading word capacity, certainly when it comes to unreliables. http://bit.ly/1RNZToZ

Neil Frandsen Clayton Slade: Really? I am mixed-farm-raised, where we got Grid Electricity the year I was 14. Before that, we used kerosene lamps, and white gas-burning Coleman Lanterns for light. We used coal & wood burning kitchen stove, plus diesel-fuel burning Coleman heaters to warm our farmhouse.
Some neighbours use the classic water-pumping hi-torque windmill for pumping water, plus had the Wincharger 32V DC System installed.
A Wincharger sends 32V DC out to the farmstead's buildings, plus charges the very large number of 6V lead-acid batteries that fill shelves in 2/3 of the large shed at the base of the Wincharger's Tower. Six batteries in Series, then the series groups linked in parallel, as many batteries as could be afforded, to get enough Plate Area to carry the Farmstead through the 3 No Wind Power conditions.
When that failed, the 32V DC Delco Generator's gasoline engine auto-started, to do the work the wind was not doing.
Some cold evenings, the Delco's engine refused to Auto-start, thus providing Dad & the children opportunity to practise cold start cranking, then sparkplug removal & warmings. On 30-below nights, the engine oil could be warmed by burning some kerosene below the crankcase...

Yes, the Wind Power was so cheap, and reliable, the folk using it quickly changed to the Grid's 110/220 volt, 60-cycle supply, and relaxed. The water-pumping windmill _might_ be retained, if the water storage on farm was large enuf to carry the folk, and the domestic animals, thru the 3 No Windpower Conditions...

I have argued since the beginning of the Green "Money Siphon" programs that a vertical helix would solve most of the problems with windmills. The West is going to look mighty stupid if this small company from a small country outperforms their Trillion-dollar government projects. But then, actual results were never the goal, were they?

James Dugan
James Dugan If you read the scientist's ACTUAL report (I posted something about it a day or three ago on my page), it's simply reporting that dropping solar activity is likely to do what it did during previous "little ice age" events.

Some AGW supporters tried t
o get her paper pulled and failed. That speaks volumes to me about their political goals, and makes me wonder if they WANT the truth out there.

...Tom, where does the report say "sun activity is down and temperature are up"?

Temperature records from many sources show that average temps haven't increased since '98. AGW supporters argue this isn't true - but it really depends on WHO you believe, and what data set you look at.

I don't buy the whole AGW story

I've been accused of having a political agenda because of that.

I don't.

I simply see no point in wasting time and (tax) money pursuing something that appears to me to be a political Red Herring more than scientific fact.

...my two cents.

The article, about EPA Rulemaking for "RFS", is exquisitely complex. Exactly what was the Law creating the Renewable Fuel Standard supposed to cause, or control???

On Aug. 4, the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers filed a petition for rulemaking with the U.S. EPA, asking the agency to move the point of obligation under the renewable fuel standard (RFS) to the owner of hydrocarbons at the rack, which is the same point where fuel excise taxes are collected. Refiners and importers are currently considered obligated parties under the RFS.

Within its petition, the AFPM describes several problems it sees with the RFS, including those related to implementation, compliance and the renewable identification number (RIN) market. The group argues that the “the existing point of obligation for RFS compliances exacerbates the implementation and compliance issues with the RFS.” The organization also argues that the EPA predicated its regulations on faulty assumptions about the administrative burden of a point of obligation and faulty assumptions about the RIN market. “Critically, the EPA also committed to revisiting the point of obligation if it became clear that the RIN market is not functioning as intended,” the AFPM continued in the petition.
