  • In case you missed it: Luiz Alberto Araújo, head of the environmental department of Altamira in the Brazilian Amazon, was assassinated last Thursday. Araújo helped launch an investigation into illegal logging in the Amazon that led to the arrest of ringleader Antonio José Junqueira Vilela Filho, known as AJJ.
AJJ and his son were accused of illegally clearing 294 square kilometers (113 square miles) of Amazon rainforest, employing loggers that were held in slave-like conditions.
Earlier this year Araújo's team also collected over 16 tons of dead fish secretly buried near the giant Belo Monte hydroelectric dam. Norte Energia, the company in charge of Belo Monte, was fined RS$35.3 million (US$11.0 million).
According to Global Witness, 448 environmentalists were killed in Brazil from 2002-2013. We salute Araújo's investigations that sought to uphold the rule of law in the Amazon, and protect the forest for all.
