"To put meaning in one's life may end in madness, but life without meaning is the torture of restlessness and vague desire- it is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid." - Edgar Lee Masters "I seem to wish to have some importance in the play of time. If not, then sad was my mother's pain, my breath, my bones, my web of nerves, my wondering brain, to be shaped and quickened with such anticipation only to feed the swamp of space. We have to face it. Trump and his vicious band of billionaires are not the result of a freak election. This has been coming for a long time. This is a government that could not care less about the needs of the American people. It is a government of pure self-interest and greed. And there is no opposition to it. The Democrats are essentially the same party with the same 'values'. There is no movement of any significance outside the old parties. Quick Notes on Sleaford

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 13 hours ago
Only two things have come out of Sleaford. Those mods (well, their name anyway) and predictions of imminent doom for the Labour Party. Yes, at the Sleaford and North Hykeham by-election, Labour failed to turn in a creditable performance. It dropped seven points, the Tories and kippers lost a couple apiece, and the LibDems surged past from nowhere and claimed the number three spot. I don't see cataclysm written in the by-election results. It's hardly a place Labour should expect to do well, but it does condense two problems the party has. The first is with the former LibDem voters. ... more »

I’ve mentally flagged up a few topics to blog, mainly gleaned from other blogs rather than from the BBC for the simple reason that the BBC has barely reported them. The first is Naz Shah, who has been on our screens news recently, in particular starring in Channel 5’s little tribute to Jo Cox - a day in the life of three MPs. “Behind Closed Doors”. Pulling Together

Owen Gray at Northern Reflections - 20 hours ago
Yesterday, Canada's first ministers met to finalize a strategy for fighting climate change. The plan puts a price on carbon -- and, as of now, the price is too low. Tom Walkom writes: The per tonne carbon emission price he suggested two months ago — $10 in 2018 rising to $50 per tonne by 2022 — is simply too low to get the job done. Experts I’ve talked to say if Canada hopes to meet even the minimal targets it agreed to at the Paris climate-change conference last year, it would have to implement a price of $30 per tonne now — rising to $200 by 2030. That’s because the whole point... more »

Seattle Sues Monsanto For Poisoning Citizens

Devastated by the American Presidential Election

Like most of my readers, I am devastated by the 2016 American Presidential election results (and by the Congressional election results as well.) I have waited a few weeks to write about it so as not to be reacting too emotionally to the results. Since that time my usual focus on philosophy has faded into the background as the country in which I was born and lived all of my life finds itself in perhaps its greatest existential crisis. http://ieet.org/archive/shakespeare-1716106_960_720.jpg

Beyond Dome City colonies to Shell Worlds or Paraterraforming as a shortcut to making planets habitable

noreply@blogger.com (brian wang) at Next Big Future - 1 day ago
Existing covered areas and domes on Earth are in the 30-40 acre ranges and with costs of $400 million to 1 billion. There is also strong material (EFTE) which is 100 times lighter than glass and which can lower costs by 4 times. Very large geodesic domes could cover several square miles on Mars. Mars has one third of the gravity on Earth, so dome cities could be very large there. A large “shell” can be used to encase an alien world (asteroid or moon), keeping its atmosphere contained long enough for long-term changes to take root. Why Africans Fish With Mosquito Nets

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
Why not? The first simple reality is that nets are not easily available for free. They cannot be made easily either. I know this because i grew up fishing net free. A net system would have been seriously useful. Thus using a mosquito net is a sound innovation. After all it will consistently toss a handful of fish into the evening fry up. Because it was not obvious, we should have provide sheets of netting to subsistence peoples of different mesh sizes a long time ago but did not. It is no trick at all after you have the net to lash together a hand made trap. So yes any type... more »

The Benefit of Trade Is the Import; The Cost Is the Export

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 1 day ago
Well yes and no. The benefit of all trade is the degree to which that trade stimulates employment. That has been habitually ignored. Clearly this is important however the numbers balance out. Some industries such as the auto industry have a huge tail after the actual manufacture. This even more so in the rag trade where a ten dollar import costs spins fifty dollars in distribution costs. The reality is that we must generally balance trade and minimize government surcharges lest we create future difficulties. The error has been to ignore the employment aspect of a given trade ... more »

Obama at least ended the outright stalemate. That has begun a dialogue. I think that the best policy is to simply let it go. We will see plenty of folks visit and even invest. This all facilitates natural change as the old boys all die off. Applied communism was monstrous. Fidel was hardly unique. A lot of this was hinted at in the past but the blockage of research prevented us from getting hard answers. The immediate take home is that smoking is a bad idea if it is chronic. The second take home is that we do not know the active element causing these effects. It is likely THC but not necessarily. We need to replicate this work with raw cannabis juice. Then we need to test for THC. Once we know we can produce effective product that may avoid this problem. . * Marijuana users 'have abnormally low blood flow in every part of the brain - including Alzheimer's danger zones... more »

*Reuters:* *U.S.-led warplanes destroy fleet of Islamic State oil tankers in Syria* U.S.-led coalition planes destroyed 168 Islamic State oil tanker trucks in Syria, the coalition said on Friday, in the largest strike of its kind and the latest instance of what U.S. officials say has been a successful effort to starve the militant group of revenues. The air strikes targeted the truck fleet near Palmyra, Syria on Thursday, a coalition statement said. Their destruction means lost revenues of about $2 million to Islamic State, the estimated value of fuel in the trucks, the coalition... more »

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 1 day ago
Rudy Giuliani won't be Donald Trump's secertary of state or have any other job in his Cabinet: President-elect Donald Trump says Rudy Giuliani is taking himself out of consideration for a position in his administration. Giuliani, a loyal Trump supporter throughout the campaign, was an early front-runner to be secretary of state. So What Happens Once The Republicans Implement Ryan's And Price's Plan To Kill The Affordable Care Act?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Yesterday we all read that life expectancy-- particularly for the American working class-- has dropped. And you can't even blame the NRA for all of it-- heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, drug overdoses are all contributing, as Gaius went into more deeply this morning. And Trump, Pence and Tom Price haven't even been sworn in yet! In theory Trump and the congressional Republicans are in synch about repealing Obamacare. Trump campaigned on repealing it and replacing it with something fabulous. Congressional Republicans mostly just campaigned on repealing it, pres... more »

Dec. 9: Donald Trump - Hero!

Graeme Decarie at The Decarie Report - 1 day ago
And liar. Donald Trump saved a 1100 jobs that were about to be moved by Carrier from Indianapolis and out of the U.S. And he's not even president yet. Isn't that wonderful? Actually, it's not. He announced to eleven hundred workers he had saved their jobs. In fact, he saved only 550. The other 550 will find that out the day they get their final pay cheques. And that's not all that's wrong with this deal. Their employer will get a great tax break and other goodies out of this. And who will have to carry an extra tax load to make up for that? Not the Trumps of this world who don't ... more »
