America's always had black inventors – even when the patent system explicitly excluded them

Shontavia Johnson, Professor of Intellectual Property Law, Drake University at Science + Technology – The Conversation - 2 hours ago
Thomas L. Jennings became the first black American patent holder in 1821. America has long been the land of innovation. More than 13,000 years ago, the Clovis people created what many call the “first American invention” – a stone tool used primarily to hunt large game. This spirit of American creativity has persisted through the millennia, through the first American patent granted in 1641 and on to today. One group of prolific innovators, however, has been largely ignored by history: black inventors born or forced into American slavery. Though U.S. patent law was created with color... more »

President Donald Trump has said little about the world’s longest undefended border – the one between the U.S. and Canada. Trump barely addressed the issue at his first meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Feb. 13 in Washington. Although Trudeau’s vision of openness and diversity may conflict with Trump’s vision of “America First,” the leaders parted ways with an amicable handshake. The two leaders have different views on their borders. While Trudeau announced that Canada is open to the world’s refugees, Trump has focused the world’s attention on the U.S.-Mexico b... more »

*"That's Life"* by Chuck Gallozzi "The following is an ancient Chinese parable that is told to this day because of the wisdom it contains. Once upon a time, a poor farmer was dismayed to learn his horse had died during the night. "That's terrible," his neighbors said, "How will you till this rocky soil without your horse?" "That's life," said the farmer to his friends. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the village, a certain rich man heard of the farmer's plight and took pity on him, giving one of his many horses to the poor man as a gift. "That's wonderful! Speedy Trial

James C Morton at Morton's Musings - 10 hours ago
How long should a criminal case take to get heard? The Canadian Constitution provides that anyone charged with an offence is entitled to a speedy trial. The concept is that having a charge hanging over your head for a long time is not fair - what's more evidence for trial may not last well. Witnesses' memories fade over time and proving a case becomes progressively harder as time goes on. Society also has an interest in having cases heard promptly. Crime and punishment should go together and not be separated by years of delay. In the fairly recent past trials were heard much more ... more »

At the same time he claimed IS had fallen apart because it has lost most of its leaders and were low on supplies. Similar statements are made almost everyday by ISF commanders.
