"The Case Against Hope"

noreply@blogger.com (CoyotePrime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 29 minutes ago
"The Case Against Hope" by Buddha of Hollywood "I was trying to define “worry” and “hope” and it occurred to me that they are brother and sister emotions. Both “worry” and “hope” are unfounded expectations; one that things will get worse and the other that things will get better– some how. And both “worry” and “hope” have the same hypnotic power to paralyze action. I remember growing up under the communist rule. Life was really hard; things were pretty bad and getting worse every day. It can’t get worse than this, people were saying, it is bound to get better. But things never got ... more »

*“The Better Angels Of Our Nature: * * How Charles Dickens Influenced Abraham Lincoln" * by Gene Griessman, Ph.D. “Here’s the story of an obscure but beautiful quotation from Charles Dickens that found its way into the First Inaugural Address by Abraham Lincoln. In 1861, before his inauguration, Lincoln showed a draft of what he intended to say to William Seward, his Secretary of State. Seward recommended that Lincoln conclude with conciliatory words, and sketched out a few sentences for Lincoln to consider. Seward’s rough draft, which has been preserved, contains the expression “... more »

Trump And Kislyak-- What The Hell Is Going On?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 hour ago
How did the 180 degree turn-around on Ukraine get into the Republican Party platform? At the time, it was widely reported in the news-- generally without comment or controversy-- that Trump had demanded it and that no one stood up to him. His own national security adviser at the time, J.D. Gordon-- who admitted late this afternoon to Jim Acosta that *he too* had meetings with Kislyak during campaign-- said last March that Trump had *personally* ordered it. Did no one wonder why? Brian Naylor reported the changes in early August. "When Republican Party leaders drafted the platform ... more »

Nicotine Vapor Has Fewer Genetic Effects Than Cigarette Smoke

Stop Kiln Yourself To Make Ceramics

The manufacture of cement, bricks, bathroom tiles and porcelain crockery normally requires a great deal of heat: a kiln is used to fire the ceramic materials at temperatures well in excess of 1,000°C. The scientists used a calcium carbonate nanopowder as the starting material and instead of firing it, they added a small amount of water and then compacted it. read more

He needs to be better appreciated although i am sure that modifying the logic and conclusions to meet his time and place will take you elsewhere. A good read and worth some effort. What Is Russian President Putin Up To?

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 23 hours ago
Sergei Karpukhin / Reuters Strobe Talbott and Jessica Brandt, The Atlantic: *What Putin Is Up To* *And why he may have overplayed his hand*. Each year on December 20, the Russian intelligence community pays homage to its enduring guardianship of the Motherland. It was on this date in 1917, six weeks after the Bolshevik Revolution, that Vladimir Lenin established the Cheka, an acronym for “Emergency Commission.” Over the ensuing decades, the commission’s nomenclature and organization chart mutated: It became the OGPU from 1923 to 1934, the NKVD until the early 1950s, and then the KG... more »

US Never Respected the One China Policy and Never Will

Land Destroyer at Land Destroyer - 1 day ago
*March 3, 2017* (Ulson Gunnar - NEO) - The US has reiterated its alleged commitment to honoring the "One China" policy under which it is recognized there is only one Chinese government. The policy exists in direct reference to Taiwan and its status as a break-away province from Beijing's authority. The BBC's article, "Trump agrees to honour 'One China' policy despite threats," would report that: *US President Donald Trump has climbed down on past threats and agreed to honour the so-called "One China" policy. * *He backed the long-standing agreement during a call with Chinese Presid... more »

Rational People Do Not Troll

Anoop Verma at For The New Intellectual - 1 day ago
In the social media I am noticing a rise in incidences of trolling and bad behaviour by certain people who pretend that they are the followers of Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism. But when you enter into discussion with them you find that they don't have any knowledge of philosophy, and that they are too boorish to hold a logical discussion. Their method of argumentation consists of badgering their adversary into silence. To expose and denounce such disorderly and unethical conduct of people who are giving a bad name to Ayn Rand's ideas, I made this post on my Facebook page. I r... more »

Tooth be told: Millions of years of evolutionary history mark those molars

Debbie Guatelli-Steinberg, Professor of Anthropology, The Ohio State University at Science + Technology – The Conversation - 1 day ago
Upper teeth of a Neanderthal who lived about 40,000 years ago. Debbie Guatelli-Steinberg, CC BY-NC “Show me your teeth and I’ll tell you who you are.” These words, attributed to 19th-century naturalist George Cuvier, couldn’t be more correct. The pearly whites we use every day over and over and over again are clues not just to our own individual lives but also to our evolutionary history. Teeth lock into their physical structure remarkable detail about the creatures whose mouths they’re in, whether our own or those of our ancient ancestors. Fossil teeth are tiny time capsules that p... more »

The IMF Should Be Worried On What Is Happening In Ukraine Right Now

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
*Leonid Bershidsky, Bloomberg*: *What the IMF Doesn't Know About Ukraine* The conflict between Ukraine and Russia entered a new phase on Wednesday. The separatist, pro-Russian "people's republics" of eastern Ukraine announced they were taking over Ukrainian oligarchs' assets on their territory. Few people outside Ukraine know that throughout the three-year hostilities, these factories and mines paid Ukrainian taxes, and their output was counted toward Ukraine's gross domestic product. If the takeover stands, Ukraine won't see the predicted economic growth. Unlike the military acti... more »

Look, I like a good harira and a sumptuous tagine as much as anyone. But I haven't been to Morocco more than a dozen times because of either. I first visited Morocco early in 1969; it was my first trip to a "non-Western" country. I loved everything about it, but it was the generosity and welcoming nature of the Moroccan people that blew my mind. That's not just why I keep returning but it was in part why I immediately embarked on a 2 year journey that took me through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, all Muslim-majority countries (as well as India which has over 170 million ... more »

Can the government save money by privatizing prisons, Medicare and other functions?

A detention center in Eloy, Arizona. AP Photo/Ricardo Arduengo Should we run the government like a business? Donald Trump seems to think so. During his campaign for president, Trump returned again and again to his supposed success as a businessman and promised government programs “under budget and ahead of schedule.” His hotel in Washington would be “a metaphor for what we can accomplish for this country.” The qualities Trump sees in himself are what he seems have been looking for in his Cabinet. His nominees for the State, Treasury and Commerce departments are successful business... more »
