Birth Defects, A Biblical Great Tribulation And Other Myths About The Eclipse

Hank Campbell at Science 2.0 - Physical Sciences - 13 hours ago
On August 21st, from west coast to east the United States will be treated to a rare event; an eclipse of the sun. Not just a partial eclipse either. Through the entire arc, a swath of land about 70 miles wide will have a total eclipse. There's been so much excitement that social media has made "path of totality" part of the lexicon. read more

The U.S. Navy Has given Us a Glimpse of How It Will Fight High-Tech Wars

Sandra Erwin at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Sandra Erwin* *Security, * Drones and robots will be part of the future fleet. The Navy this week put on a two-day show that offered a peek into the future of high-tech combat. And the most important players happened to be robots. At the 2017 advanced naval technology exercise, or ANTX, the Navy let the drones loose, hoping to demonstrate that robots have reached the point where they can be trusted to help protect ships, spy on enemy submarines and ward off aerial missile attacks. The Navy’s push to turn more combat missions over to robots started years ago and is gaining new ... more »

North Korea Could Unleash the Unthinkable: Nuclear War Between Russia and America

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * Yes, this could happen. In the event that North Korea tests another Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) or potentially launches an attack on the United States, the Pentagon could try to intercept those missiles with the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system. However, as many analysts have pointed out, the interceptors that miss their target could reenter the Earth’s atmosphere inside Russian airspace. Such an eventuality could prove to be a serious problem unless steps are taken to address the issue now. “You should also be aware of the ... more »

Dave Majumdar at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * Hollow-out a mountain in the Sierra Nevada range to create a super-hardened fortress The Cold War arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union produced many innovative ideas on how best to ensure the survivability of each side’s nuclear deterrent. *"America’s Second Civil War"* by Pat Buchanan “They had found a leader, Robert E. Lee - and what a leader! No military leader since Napoleon has aroused such enthusiastic devotion among troops as did Lee when he reviewed them on his horse Traveller.” So wrote Samuel Eliot Morison in his magisterial “The Oxford History of the American People” in 1965. First in his class at West Point, hero of the Mexican War, Lee was the man to whom President Lincoln turned to lead his army. But when Virginia seceded, Lee would not lift up his sword against his own people, and chose to defend his ... more »

After Charlottesville, Michael Harris writes, Donald Trump becomes the touchstone by which we judge our own politicians: The Trump White House isn’t the only North American political institution that has lost touch with the real world. Ritual Magic in Theory & Practice

The problem with magic as a meme is that it assumes a quite different relationship with what is simply the other side. The other side works to support us at our request so long as our intent is GOOD. When we choose to cross that line we are soon dealing with spirits that mean ill. Wrapping all this in a meme of magic really opens that door much too wide. A whole mythology has arisen in support of the meme of magic and it has been linked to power and sexuality and now even to satanic rituals in support of sexual perversion. this obviously cannot have a happy ending and is ob... more »
