Understanding the Case for a Strike on North Korea: Brutality, Rationality and Deterrence

*T. Negeen Pegahi* *Security, Asia* While many public statements from the administration and its allies have suggested one rationale for war, digging into the logic underpinning the “bloody nose” idea suggests another. War with North Korea became more likely with the recent appointments of hawks John Bolton and Mike Pompeo as national security advisor and secretary of state. While the White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will meet for talks “by May,” the two nonetheless hold widely divergent preferences. Donald Trump finally admits he does not care about America. Okay it was Alec Baldwin playing Donald Trump, but it certainly had the ring of truth didn't it?

I am absolutely convinced that this is almost exactly how Trump's mind works. I don't think that Baldwin was so much playing a part as he was channeling the actual subconscious of Tangerine Hitler. And I would bet my house that a number of the people who work closely with him have heard him mutter “I don’t care about America. This whole four-year presidency is a cash grab,” more than a few times under his breath. Bet my house. P.S. Well, you might want to think about walking instead once you've seen this bizarre bunch of people who were snapped on various tubes, subways and undergrounds around the world. From men to women with chickens on leashes, dogs in bags, ducks on laps and kittens beneath their skirts, this collection of pictures reminds us that no matter how interesting life can be above the ground, nothing compares to what you'll find if you'r... more »

Trump is Henry Jekyll's Potion

jurassicpork at Welcome Back to Gotham City - 10 hours ago
It's all about Donald Trump (at least in his funhouse mirror worldview), yet it isn't. Those of us in the reality-based community find it all too easy to blame Donald Trump for everything that's wrong with our once-great nation. He's the world's biggest lightning rod and, yes, we can trace the corruption, the forced deportations of Dreamers and Wall Street's instability directly to him. Throw a ton of shit at Trump and at least half of it will stick. But let's not give Trump too much credit- He did not shape this country nor create the political climate that makes the... more »

Clamping vs towing of vehicles in Metro Manila

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 10 hours ago
Towing and clamping of vehicles for various types of "illegal parking" is a big business for LGUs in Metro Manila, from MMDA to city/municipal governments. I think there is a silent competition between MMDA and city governments to get more money from motorists. I took this photo in Bagtikan St., Makati last March 06. This car has intruded into the pedestrian lane, Makati City Hall personnel has clamped it, fine is P1,900. April 5, Talisay St., Makati. Not far from Bagtikan St. Also clamped by Makati LGU personnel. April 6 evening, not far from Zubu Chon resto, Talisay st. Makati.... more »

Joe Biden Boasts of Keeping 'Brilliant Judge' Off Supreme Court

Diogenes Sarcastica™ at Diogenes' Middle Finger - 11 hours ago
*NewsBusters:* "More than 30 years after a relentless campaign of character assassination kept Robert Bork from a seat on the Supreme Court, one of the architects of that attack is belatedly crediting its target for his brilliance. Appearing on the podcast 'Pod Save America' Joe Biden revisited his role in derailing Bork's nomination to the court in 1987 while Biden was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "I'm the guy that kept there from being a guy who was maybe the most brilliant conservative who was nominated for the Supreme Court (Favreau snickers) and I kept him off... more »
