A good reason to avoid valet parking - and perhaps Hyatt Hotels, too?

Courtesy of a link provided by Miguel at Gun Free Zone, we learn of this incident. And here's one of the photographs accompanying the Facebook post. Miguel offers his own opinions on the incident. My take on this is that every employee involved should be summarily fired. If this isn't misconduct, I don't know what is! They might claim they were checking to see if the car contained anything that might be a security risk, but it's pretty clear that they were just itching to check out a guest's fancy ride. So much for guest privacy and their rights to private property! If H... more »

Trump's reckless, unwarranted and utterly irrational action will pull Washington ever deeper into an incendiary middle eastern vortex of political and religious conflict that has absolutely nothing to do with the safety and security of the America people. BWorld 206, Intellectual property rights in East Asia

Nonoy Oplas at Government and Taxes - 14 hours ago
* This is my column in BusinessWorld last April 19, 2018. The degree of wealth and economic size of East Asian economies generally correlate with their degree of private property rights protection, both physical and non-physical or intellectual property. While protection of physical properties like houses, cars, and land are easier to see and measure, the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) like patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets are not so tangible. IPRs are important because they represent the “heart and soul” of private enterprises and the goods and ... more »

How Misinformation Spreads on Social Media—And What To Do About It

cmeseroleguest at Lawfare - 14 hours ago
“We take misinformation seriously,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote just weeks after the 2016 election. In the year since, the question of how to counteract the damage done by “fake news” has become a pressing issue both for technology companies and governments across the globe. Yet as widespread as the problem is, opportunities to glimpse misinformation in action are fairly rare. Most users who generate misinformation do not share accurate information too, so it can be difficult to tease out the effect of misinformation itself. For example, when President Trump shares misinfo... more »

Small town seeks economic recovery and growth

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 15 hours ago
I grew up in a small northern Illinois community, Mt. Morris (and Forreston 15 miles away) which had a healthy economy in the 1940s through the 1960s based on the printing/publishing/magazine fulfillment business. The town had been built first on education, and when the college failed during the 1930s Depression, private investors took over the buildings and developed a nice economy to complete the printing business already established by the Kable twins at the turn of the century. The printing plant, originally known as Kables, was sold several times, and finally closed a few ye... more »

The Trump Administration Reaps What the Obama Administration Sowed in the Iran Deal

jgoldsmith at Lawfare - 16 hours ago
The particular manner in which President Obama crafted the Iran deal paved the way for President Trump to withdraw from it. Obama made the deal on his own presidential authority, in the face of significant domestic opposition, without seeking or receiving approval from the Senate or the Congress. He was able to do this, and to skirt constitutional requirements for senatorial or congressional consent, because he made the deal as a political commitment rather than a binding legal obligation. As Curt Bradley and I recently explained, a political commitment “imposes no obligation un... more »

In practice though it needs to start with the teachers who need to implement the appropriate responses and systems. Not least of course, establishing a daily meditation practice so the children know how and respect it. All this allows the child to separate himself from the random impulses thrown at him by his own mind. go at it long enough and our whole culture matures much quicker..
