In his latest ad, West Virginia Republican Don Blankenship strike back at Mitch McConnell by refersring to himl as "cocaine Mitch"-- as in "Ditch Cocaine Mitch." Catchy. Blankenship's polling has gone down from 1st to 3rd since McConnell's ad campaign went into full swing. Can the Presidency Trump a Special Counsel Subpoena?

Credit: Wikimedia The possibility that Special Counsel Robert Mueller might issue a subpoena to President Trump to compel him to testify before a federal grand jury has, understandably, provoked questions: Can the President be forced to testify if he refuses to give Mueller an interview voluntarily? What has the Supreme Court said on the subject? And if the staring match between Team Trump and Team Mueller becomes litigation, who is likely to win? The bottom line, in our view, is that Mueller would probably prevail if and when a battle over a grand-jury subpoena makes its way into... more »

The Vice President and the Rule of Law

It’s not entirely clear which reading better captures Pence's intentions. They’re both bad, but the subtle one is considerably worse. To lay a piece of groundwork: Joe Arpaio is not, in fact, a champion of the rule of law. He is a persistent lawbreaker who systematically violated the Constitution and was held in criminal contempt for court for refusing to mend his ways. Mahmoud Abbas, Israel’s so-called partner for peace has made a grossly offensive speech at the opening the 23rd session of the Palestinian National Council. It must have been pretty bad because even the BBC has reported it, and so has the Independent, though they don’t seem quite so sure whether to be offended or not. "Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas accused of antisemitism over Holocaust comments" They did report, however, that Emily Thornberry was in attendance, and that she condemned his comments, adding: "I hope President Abbas will immediately apologise for them," Th... more »

Why can't American auto manufacturers make a profit on cars?

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 11 hours ago
I note that Ford has announced it'll stop production of all its cars except the Mustang, concentrating instead on a range of SUV's and pickup trucks. This follows Chrysler's move in the same direction two years ago. The question is, why can foreign manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, etc. make a profit on their automobiles, while the Big Three can't? I suspect that problem goes all the way back to the 1980's, when foreign imports savaged sales of US autos. I don't know that the quality of US cars (as opposed to trucks and SUV's) ever caught up with the competition afte... more »

Today we'll play catch up with a raft of science fictional items, some of them plausible! And some almost as weirdly implausible as the world we're living in. *== Living with AI ==* How will humanity keep up with AI? Many Big Thinkers foresee AI outstripping organic humans and rendering us obsolete – at-best patronized-beloved old farts and at-worst disposable. There are some potential soft-landings, though: 1 – *Merge with the machines*, the dream of Ray Kurzweil and other cyber transcendentalists. There are many reasons to doubt the possibility, but none are yet decisive. So I ... more »

Why Russia Fears the Javelin (America's Super Tank-Killer)

Sebastien Roblin at The National Interest - 11 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * The Javelin is so effective that who the United States sells or gives Javelins to has become a political issue on more than one occasion. *When Russia provided military support to separatists in Ukraine, columns of Russian tanks were instrumental in turning back Ukrainian Army offensives and seizing government strongpoints, notably the Donetsk International Airport in January 2015. For hawks like Senator John McCain pushing for the United States to provide direct military aid to Ukraine, Javelin missiles were cited as a key weapon system that might... more »
